  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Need help finding a vent system

Folks

I am looking to add a vent system to the "man cave". I have seen in the past some nice vent systems that some of you "handymen" have installed. Can I get a lead on where to locate one and what I should be looking for in size? My cave is about 1200 sq. ft.

Please advise.

1200 sq. ft is pretty big. I've got a ~200sq. ft. space with nearly a 400 cfm direct exhaust system. If you have a newer home that's sealed pretty well you can get away with a lot lower ratio than I have but if you need to prevent the smoke from building up or if you need to clear it out really quickly, you need to think about multiple systems, IMO. If you're going with one large system I'd guess 500 cfm would be your minimum. Optimally placed, I'd suggest (2) 300+cfm fans on each side of the room but you will required a good seal to the adjacent spaces.

for 1200 sq ft you will be looking at a small whole house ventalation system. I'd look at panasonics web site.

Shoot an email to Ryan - http://www.ryandeyer.com/cigarroom/index.html

He was a lot of help when I purchased/installed my HVAC system.

I have a 400SQFT room, with a fan that pulls 1200CFMS. Its over-kill for my room.

One thing to remember.. fresh air intake is equal important to your air exhaust. If you suck out 1200CFMS.. you have to replace those 1200CFMS.

Heres a good website to get you started with choosing.

I would call a few HVAC contractors and get a few ideas and prices, 1200sq ft is a lot of space and as mentioned above you must add what you remove.

That said I have 200+ Man Cave with a window fan and a 400cfm exhaust fan (I only use it if someone joins me in the cave) and my family never smells the smoke.

Thanks gents. The cave is pretty much the entire basement. Which had taken me about 9 years to finish. Raising a family and all. Went with a "Augusta Masters" look. Now, after a few herfs, I need to add the exhaust so that everyone (wife and youngsters) can't hinder my love of sticks in the winter.

If anyone has installed a vent system, I would love to see pictures.

Thanks

Work in progress, soon the exhaust unit will have a framed room around it, to completely sound proof it.

Two exit spots mounted

Y connector, for the other exit spot

Another exit vent

Once the room is framed around the exhaust unit, my variable speed control will be mounted on that wall.

Looking good bro!

How do you plan on sound proofing it? That's the biggest concern I have with inline exhausts - they can be very loud.

No worries. If you need any help, let me know.

The wall will be soundproofed by double layered drywall/sheetrock, and filled with expandable foam insulation.

Also, Ryan is a lot of help from the site I posted early. I couldn't have even started my HVAC system without him. I'm sure he could offer a lot.

Be aware that even double layered sheetrock doesn't provide enough soundproofing through the studs. You might want to consider a double wall. 2x2 or 2x4 studs on seperate sill plates. If you don't have a vibration connection between the materials you really get a good product.
Looks great, btw.
