  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Need help with telling if this hoyo de monterrey is fake or real

Hey guys, I've gone through all my 100% confident authentic CC's and don't plan on getting anymore anytime soon, but I found a few CC's that were in my dads old humidor awhile ago dried out and I had been keeping them in a new humi to get them moist again. I never had thought about my dad and I getting fakes from cigar shops in Costa Rica when we were doing a development down there, but I think we got unlucky on a few.

I was wondering if you guys could confirm my suspicion of this Hoyo De Monterrey or better yet tell me it's not a fake (fingers crossed lol)

Keep in mind that half of these sticks were so dry that they cracked so only a few survived getting humid again. So the color may be a little off due to it.

Thanks

-Zach

Depending on how dry they got, they might not be any good, because they will have lost their oils.
I didn't really think about that. Good point though because they got dried out to the point where I had to be careful moving them into a good humidor.

It probably tastes worse than a fake now even if it was real lol.

need to see the cap close up,can you give us a pic of a whole band flat?
you do not want to put them into a humi yet, they will swell up and split.probably too late for this.............

Put them in a ziplock bag with a small piece [3 in square] of paper towel folded twice.add 3 or 4 DROPS of water and close it up in the bag. Check it daily and only add more water when the paper towel is DRY...........it will take 5 to 8 WEEKS to bring them back.
Have done this MANY times,it takes time, and you will find out if they are smokable only then............

Lol I did exactly what you said not to do. If they are real, I don't think they are even worth smoking now.

Thanks for the great advice, hopefully I won't have to use it in the future but it's always good to know.

d-boy...Can you post pics of the cap? Sometimes that's a dead giveaway. FWIW try and save them. If you can re-humidify them even just a little they might still have some life in them.

Is the band embossed? Does it have a triple cap? Do you have the box or box code? Even if it is real, from what you've said, it's probably past the point of salvation, but stranger things have happened....the only way to know for sure is to smoke it! :)

Here's a few pics of a real HdM Double Corona for reference:

Ciggy- they are beyond salvation lol. I just picked another out and it is bent like a banana shaped cigar? I can't think of anyway else to describe it

Javaman- yeah the label is embossed. I would have to go check the triple cap, but I'm pretty much just giving up on these unfortunately.

IMO it's real.
As others have said unless you have the urge to smoke a old library book, just pitch it.
Yeah I am, or I'll mess with my local B&M owner and say I brought you a nice smoke, I'll just go grab a Padrón 64 40th anniversary series. Lol

Of course I would tell him it's been through hell and back and pay for the Padrón but I mess with him all the time.
