i think that that was kind of the point to have an old pontiff that wont live that long... i know it sounds horrible but they also wanted somebody after John Paul the 2nds own mind and it appears that this is the choice....

i dont know though, i am not catholic but the John Paul II died the week i had surgery so i got to watch some serious CNN....

I was taken by suprise regarding the name he chose. I like many others thought he would certainly choose John Paul III.

Watching the news, apparently the name has something to do with his European roots. And I agree with Tobby, I think they wanted someone who wouldn't be around for quite so long. He's conservative, and fairly old. I'm guessing things will stay pretty much status quo until the next Pope.

I don't really follow the pope selection that closely, but does it usually happen this fast or does it usually take longer?

Again, from listening to the news: they said this was pretty fast. Shortest in a century if I remember correctly?

When they called, I told them to take my name off the ballot. It doesn't look good when the pope is running around with a cigar in his mouth while blessing the masses. :angel:
