  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Between the Newbie Sampler and a couple of other generous Brothers I have quite a few samples to get me started. Between that an a tin of EMP and Nightcap I picked up myself there's Easily a months worth of baccy. And that's before I get the itch again and pick up more of one, or something new I'm dying to try :).

So question is... How long can I safely store it in a ZipLock? Do I need to start jarring it ASAP, or can I work my way through and just jar the ones I like and plan to get more of?

Thanks!

The pipe baccy should be good for quite a while, only needs to be stored at 10-15% humidity. I'm using one of those airtight kitchen storage canisters for mine (you know, the types that are usually used for storing flour, sugar, grains, coffee beans, etc).

If your smoking and only a few bowls worth of samples I would say your ok for a month or so. Infact some tobacco you will notice that it may need alittle dry times when you get it out of a Tin. so in a baggie could be a good thing for them type of tobacco. i smoke a lot and there is one that i was given that I like i just don't smoke much of it because there are so many other tobaccos that it doesn't see the fire as much as it should. still in a ziploc and is over a month in bag and still moist. not as wet as it was but then it needs to dry some before i could smoke it. Had a bowl today and still made the pipe little wet. Some tobaccos that come dry in tin i would say you may want to jar right away.

just my thoughts, i am not an expert and i am sure there are others with different ideas. I can only speak about what works for me or don't work for me.

If it is going to sit for a long time I would say Jar it right away.

i have three snap'n'lock containers about the size of a cereal box each, one for VA (forward), one for ENG (LAT forward), and one for AROish stuff. each has a boveda in it, which is well more than it needs. i have samples in there that i have had for a year, and they are fine that way. and, yes, sometimes they need drying out, but i would rather that than have to rehydrate a sample...

containers like that are fairly cheap, and should be available in the grocery store.

I follow javajunkie's method for small samples (at his recommendation) and it's been great for me. Everything else in quantity gets jarred. It's really dependent on your ambient RH. In the dry air of the looming MN winter, I've had a sample in a baggie in my pipe kit for just two days and it's already getting too dry.
