BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.
NFL Lockout

It won't happen. Neither side wants a lockout - it benefits no one to lose all that money. All this posturing and indignation is just part of the act of bargaining. The results are important, not the process. It's like sausage. Everyone loves it, but no one wants to see how it's made.
From ESPN this morning:
"Among the other significant topics: a rookie wage scale; the owners' push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 while reducing the preseason by two games; and benefits for retired players.
Cohen said last week that the sides were far apart on the core issues.
By the end of Thursday, more will be known about exactly how far apart."
I don't know, normally in labor disputes you don't see negotiations going to the wire and turning out. I guess we'll see by tomorrow morning.

Both sides forget about the fans, who make them all the money! WIthout the fans, then the owners and players make shite!
Well, true, but I think both sides know the fans will always be there. The sport's just too damn popular to be in any danger from that.
But the fans won't always be there. After the last stike in baseball, so many fans gave up their season tickets. Took a long while for the owners/teams to get back that fan base. So both sides need to be aware of this.
That's what I'm saying. The owners are acting as if they have the leverage here, but they don't. There's about $9,000,000,000 at stake here, and if there's no 2011 season, nobody gets any of it. In the end, both sides will cave a little to avoid coming up empty.
And, something else to remember: a lockout doesn't mean no football in 2011. They still have all spring and summer to get a deal done.

Something else about how much $ owners get up-front for new stadium building, scouting, and whanot...used to be they got 100 mil upfront but the NFL wants to change that as well...guess its no surprise they cant agree, the owners would be making less money!!!!
I think Rick Reilly at EPSN has it all wrong. So what if the owners are billionaires? Their personal net worths are not the point, but rather how much how much revenue their teams make. So what if a family has owned a team for millions of years or other owners inherited the team? It's important to remember that the NFL is a business, it has to make money. Reilly uses bullshit quasi-socialist straw man arguments to make his non existent point. The owner's haven't "slapped proof on the table"? Uh, do you think they're asking for more money without making a half way decent business case for it?
Let's face it, the economy of sports is changing. Every sports league is trying to lure fans back into the stadiums and arenas. Why bother paying for a ticket, driving, parking and over priced food when you can watch the game in the comfort of your own home on your brand new kick ass 3D tv? So, naturally, there needs to be plenty of reinvestment in team facilities to make them more attractive to fans. With the way state and local budgets are looking nowadays, there's little taxpayer financing to be had.
This is not to say I side with the owners. I'm simply not privy to all the details. The NFL is a very dangerous sport. (Personally, I think the pervasive amount of safety gear each player wears paradoxically makes the game more dangerous.) Head injuries and player health care are important issues. It's hard to feel bad for either side in this debate.
The rookie pay scale is a relatively uncontroversial demand. I really don't know why the players are dragging their feet on this one. The longer negotiations go on, player lose out on bonus for various types of off season training. I think the players should agree to the new revenue split and rookie pay scale if the NFL agrees not to extend the season for another 5-10 years and offers up some better health care. That sounds pretty fair to me.
The deadline is totally arbitrary. There's going to be an agreement with this money at stake for both sides.

I doubt more now that the there will be a lockout since a judge just ruled that the owners can not use the $4 billion they have stashed from endorsement/tv contracts during a lockout. I'm sure the owners were counting on that money to help pay their rent on new stadiums and operating expenses during the lockout. W/o that they don't have as much wiggle room.

Technically a lockout happens today if an agreement isn't made, or an extension isn't agreed upon. ESPN is reporting today that an extension is very possible. With that said, I am not worried one bit if the deadline comes and goes without an agreement. Like someone said above, there's 6 months before the season starts and I don't think the owners or players are willing to actually miss games... there's a lot of time to get it done.
This is going to right down to the wire. No games will be missed, and i think the Players are going to have to cave. As stated earlier, majority of NFL owners don't/didn't get rich on the team and some have been losing money. Players are going to cave, yes football is the most popular sport but if nfl goes lockout there will still be college, Arena, CFL plenty of options to get the fix and majority of players need that paycheck to keep living the lifestyle they are used to.
Well, they extended the deadline by 24 hours... that would seem a meaningless gesture unless they were very close, no?
I sure hope so
