The city has so many nice places now... where are you staying?
Warehouse Dist.
1. Mothers if you have never been... (Overrated IMO).
2. Go to the American Sector (in D Day museum) for Lunch.
3. For Dinner Couchon, HerbSaint, or my favorite La Boca (Steak).
French Quarter:
1. For Lunch and people watching Charter House Cafe. On Toulouse and Charter street.
2. For Dinner... Stella (Business Casual/ make a reservation). Pelican Club and next to that they have a B&M.
For a Cigar go to Crescent City Cigar shop and ask for Armando (Tell him Habana Port sent you).
Uptown:
1. Breakfest take the street car all the way down St. Charles and go to Camelia Cafe.
2. Dinner: Clancey's or for BBQ Shrimp Pascal's Manale.

A while back I asked blooz4u (A.J.) for the same thing and here's his response:

Hey brutha! Have your friend go to Dos Jefes cigar bar on Tchopoutulas, and the original Emeril's in the warehouse district for great dinner. Hit up Mother's on Poydras for a phenomenal breakfast, but get there early as there is usually always a line !"

Bloody Marys - Cafe Mespero - Decatur St. (within a stone's throw of Cafe du MOnde)
Gumbo - Gumbo Shop - 630 St Peters St
Po' Boy - Mothers Restaurant - 401 Poydras St. Fresh shrimp, freshly battered and fried in clean oil served on fresh soft bread...outta this world!!!
No trip to NO is complete without a Hurricane from Pat Obriens (718 St. Peters St.)
Soft shell crab - Paul Prudhommes place, K-Paul's. Last time i was there I walked in with shorts and a t-shirt carying a big styrofoam cup of frozen hurricane. nobody said a word. His food has big, bold deep flavors. Very hearty flavors.

I've been there!!! EXCELLENT FOOD! Right off of Bourbon St.
Be careful though New Orleans is a rough city.

Yes be careful in the Quarter late night. Warehouse Dist and Uptown your fine for the most part.

Lunch at Coop's (by the French Market) Just don't wear a Non-Saints Jersey in there.... you WON"T wear it out. There is one tough cookie of a waitress in there that don't play that!
Snack at Cafe du Monde (remember to breathe out while eating the beginets (ben-yays)
Cigar at Cresent City Cigar with the HUGE cup of to-go Chicory coffee you get from Cafe du Monde. Armando is a great guy to talk with!
Dinner... hmm... so many good places..... I like Pat O'Brians. They have good drinks and good food. Try the Hurricane and the Bloody Mary.
Dessert: Handgrenades from Hurricane Ilse on Bourbon and the Huslter Club.
Park at the Jax brewery lot off Decatur, its pretty central area.
If anyone asks "I bet you I know where you got your shoes at?" Tell them "On my feet" and walk away. (Hustlers)

Ok, gentleman I'm back. Thanks all for the suggestions, some favs: by far coops is awesome, gumbo shop is always good, lafitte blacksmith, charm pub, old absinthe house. Shoes were on my feet, lol! Good time as always, and boy do you new orleaners love your college ball!

I'm sorry that I didn't see this thread until now, when you are back. For future (and others') visits, MHO is that the best restaurant in NOLA is the Pelican Club in the Quarter. It's on Exchange Alley, a small street that runs between and parallel to Royal and Chartres around the corner from the Hotel Monteleone, which is on Royal. Having said that, it's tough to find a bad meal in NOLA.
Regarding safety, like any city, just use some common sense and, if you are in the Quarter at night, just stay on the streets where you see lots of people.

I sure was, caught the end of the game in my hotel lobby, where they had projected it on a wall and about 100 or so people, some marines that were celebrating their bday. Wild.
