oh no, another pipe newb

Howdy,

I'm new to pipes and I'm looking for tobacco suggestions. I have a MM corn cob and so far I've sampled Lane 1-Q, Sweet Vanilla Honeydew, and SG Squadron Leader.

Squadron Leader has had the best taste out of those 3. I smoke more cigars than I do pipes so I think I'm looking for something with a fuller taste profile.

I'm going to try to find some Frog Morton Cellar and MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired. Do you guys think I'm on the right track? What other suggestions do you have?

Squadron leader is an English blend. The others are aros. Try the Frog morton, Dunhill my mixture 965, Dunhill nightwatch. Those are easy to find and very good.

If you crave vitamin N like I do, you might want to try some 1792 flake or Irish flake...

yup, big english/ balkan blends allowed me finally understand piping. grrrrr has three great ones there. others include cornell and deil pirate kake, GL pease gaslight, balkan sasieni, and seattle pipe club plum pudding. all chock full of that deep smokey latakia leaf. good news is, as these blends have a habit of burning fairly dry and cool, they are great to start out with. i love virginias, virginia/ perique, etc., but they can burn poorly, or bite the crap out of you, if your smoking pace or packing technique are off.

Unfortunately I've already dealt with tongue bite but I'm drying the tobacco more now and working on slowing down on my pulls which has made a night and day difference.

Get in on the trade too and ask for something in those lines that you havent tried yet, it will probably open you up to alot to try.

Ok, I'll check that out next week once I'm back home. I have to fly to Denver for work. I'm looking forward to check out the tobacco selection at some decent B&Ms. There isn't much selection where I'm located.

Yep. As a new guy, what I've read on Virginias has been daunting in terms of bite, subtlety and experience. But Frog Morton seems to be the easy, gentle way into Virginias. Does that seem apt?
