While at Holts this weekend, it was pointed out to me that Pepin has made a maduro version of the Old Henry stick that is yes, one of many exclusives done for Holts.
Nicaraguan filler, binder & you guessed it: Connecticutt Broadleaf Maduro wrapper.
This wrapper is quickly becoming very popular due to it's rich, complex & spicy flavors... It is the very same wrapper that is used for the DPG JJ Maduro, Cabaiguan Maduro, El Triunfador & (the lighter selections) La Riqueza lines. (note: also on the 'Frank' & a number of up-coming releases, tba...)
I grabbed a corona to try out & at $5.25 for a single - I gotta give it props for being a value (not to mention the box price). These are not yet up on the website, but watch for this one!
It cut very cleanly (this wrapper is very toothy, sturdy & holds nicely). I didn't get much from the pre-lit draw. Tasted a bit nutty I guess... Haha.
Once lit, I got a rush of spicy sweet flavors similar to the Tatuaje Havana VI line mixed with the JJ maduro. I think it was not quit as full as the JJ, but even spicier than the ET, and stronger (& dirtier) than the Cab mad..
This mellowed out by the end of the 1st third, but not quite as much as the La Ricky does. By the second half, the Tat red flavors become more prominent. By the last third, it's building strength again - the richness of the wrapper is really shining now... nice looong, light grey ashes on this puppy.
Cons: it did take on a little of the bitterness that is prone to this leaf when fresh & it wasn't quite as 'refined' as the sticks I mentioned earlier.
I think it's priced right & definitely recommend trying this - once it becomes more widely available (online)..
I would guestimate this as a 87 rating...
