  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

REVIEW: Oliva Serie V

The Oliva family has spent countless hours blending tobaccos to create the incredibly tasty Serie 'G', Serie 'O' and Special 'S' lines. All of those cigars are fantastic, yet none specifically cater to the full-bodied ligero smoker. Well ladies and gentlemen; if you prefer ligero as your choice leaf, then the Serie V was blended with you specifically in mind. Consisting solely of all ligero filler, harvested from the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua, Serie V is a powerhouse cigar which lacks the intense 'punch' that most full-bodied cigars create on the palate, producing a very pleasant initial taste. The filler is concealed by a Habano Sun Grown wrapper and together this blend offers spicy nuances with slight hints of espresso and a finish which includes notes of chocolate. Did we forget to mention the Serie V is also a powerful but incredibly balanced Nicaraguan puro? Delicious!

Torpedo (6" x 56) This is the most preferred size in this blend. The stick is very easy to light and draw. It burns cool and the strength is very consistent from start to finish. The ligero qualities are not noticeably dominant until the last three inches. The finish contains many hints of pepper, but is very rich as well. Perfect balance. 92/100

Churchill Extra (7" x 52) Again, very easy to light. The draw was not as loose, but this stick is pleasantly complex. The finish is very strong and hints of cocoa and espresso are evenly experienced throughout most of the smoke. These nuances then transform into strong hints of pepper and earthy undertones which can be easily noticed lingering in the back of the palate. A well constructed cigar producing lots of creamy smoke, this size is only second to the Torpedo. 91/100

Double Toro (6" x 60) Noticed more cedar notes and chocolate nuances in comparison to other sizes. As expected, the draw is very smooth but the strength contains very little bite for being a 60 ring gauge. The smoke is very creamy and has an excellent aroma. 88/100

Double Robusto (5" x 54) This size begins with some intense strength and flavor from the first puff. The nuances of coffee and earth seem accented in comparison to the other sizes. Noticeable spicy nuances are prominent throughout and this cigar has a strong, but pleasant finish. 88/100

Special V Figurado (6" x 60) The shape is unique but causes a hassle when lighting. There is almost no flavor for the first couple of puffs and it gradually increases until the first inch is reached, then this stick really gives off some strength. It is well constructed, like the other sizes, but drastically mellows out after the first 2 inches are surpassed. Coffee flavors are very dominant on the palate and this size did burn very evenly. 87/100

Belicoso (5" x 54) Noticed this stick burns very slow, even, and is incredibly smooth for the amount of peppery flavors it produces. Leaves a subtle taste of wood and cocoa on the lips, but the smoke is not as milky as expected. Burns a bit hotter in comparison to other sizes. 86/100

Lancero (7" x 38) Due to its small ring gauge, the draw is very tight. The stick does burn even and slow but the heat can be felt on the fingertips. Tastes a lot stronger than the other sizes and the spicy notes are more noticeable over the coffee-like flavors. 86/100

That's funny, the Lancero I had seemed slightly underfilled and drew perfectly.

My favorite Oliva yet, but too expensive here to make it a weekly smoker. I do have a couple, but they are aging for a year. These are part of my first group of smkes I am committing to age.

I just picked up a couple of Double Robustos. I plan on smoking one tomorrow and will let you know if my feelings have changed. Between Oliva and Illusions I am moving away from Punch as my everyday stick.

I just bought 20 of them and won't touch them. 10 Double Toro, 5 Double robusto and 5 Figurado. Of course, when momma finds out, I dead, but what a way to go. I have already had one of each and know they are awesome
