  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Wierd thread title I know. When I first started smoking cigars in the summer of '05 I caught the Opus X fever. Everywhere I went, I bought Opus because they were the best of the best, or so I was told. After I had a 50 ct desktop damn near full of em, I found out they didn't really fit the flavor profile I like. All of them sold...quickly. Then I was shown the light. I came upon a 10-12 yo original Opus X Perf #2. It was nothing like the freshies I'd come to dislike. If only I had the bank account, and more importantly the patience to age a 50 ct desktop for 10 years, I'd be set. Today, I decided to try a fresh Perf X again. You know, just to see what they are like with a more experienced palate. Better, I can honestly say that. I definately tasted nuances that were not there to my inexperienced palate. However, still not what I would consider making a routine of smoking. If I had the bank and patience to age obviously yes, it would be worth it. I will make a meager attempt and put away 2 now. However, these days with so many wonderful cigars that are wonderful right off the truck, who needs patience. This I think is going to eventually hurt Opus sales. I'm curious what everyone else thinks of Opus. Sorry for the novel.

Opus is a marketing dream. High quality with very limited production and lots and lots of press. People will continue to buy the product because it is hard to get. You are right. The answer is age.

Opus X cigars are a good $5-$8 dollar cigar. They suck at the price you really have to pay for them.

I like them but refuse to hunt them down. If I come across them, I'll pick up a couple and toss them in a box somewhere in the humidor.

When did production start of those?

Seems that they have been around for some time but at the same time have more recently really taken off with the public.

Had a torpedo many years ago, by far the best NC I've ever smoked. Could have one of those every day.

Never had an Opus yet, soon though. Age is the key huh?

I like too many other smokes to spend much on opus. They seem to be more hype than substance.
Well, I agree in some ways, but in others I don't. Yes, as Chuck said they are a marketing dream. However, with age they absolutely back it up IMO. I can honestly say the Or I smoked was one of the best NC's I've ever had. The problem is that some think a cigar that expensive should be great right out of the box. I don't know if I agree, but I do know this...it keeps me from buying them. :blob:

I still purchase them when they come out, mainly because I have a large enough humidor to age them, but I also know that I can always trade them.

I've only smoked one and didn't enjoy it. That was years ago and I don't know how much age was on it.

That being said, I got a couple stashed in the humidor that have 3-4 years on them so I plan on revisting them.

check my thread"what gives".
now I haven't had the pleasure to
smoke one with lots of age, but yeah, they are ok, nothing
special to me as a freshy.
and like most I don't have the patience.

So here is my thought, if I take an Opus and one of my favorites, a padron 64 maduro or a tat cojonu 06 and let them age for 5-6 years, which one would i prefer in 2012. Still the padron or tat or will the opus be THA:smokingbo :smokingbo :smokingbo T much better.

All i know, right now my choice is clear

I love opus fresh or aged, don't matter. When they're fresh, wow the spice and the nose on those beauties is incredible. As aged, well let's just say that the fuentes knew that they were creating a phenominal cigar. What a fantastic smoke period. I love many smokes, cubans particularly when it comes to puros. As a dominican puro it is the best non-cuban money can buy hands down.

Personally, they're a stick to age. I smoke for the flavor, not the head rush or stomach- feel... but oddly, I do like the supposed "cuban- like" full bodied smokes. I chalk it up to full flavored, not so much the full bodied. Regardless, from my very limited experience, Opus X's are a "hype thing" at first but "justified hype thing" after aging.
Of course, if you want to talk about hype, I could mention certain CAO lines... case in point, all the hype over the Vision, and then they turned around and sold the company shortly after the release... but of course, I'd never rip on CAO like that...:innocent:
Just my 2 cents worth,

They will be a totally different smoke this time around David. It really is amazing how different these become. That kick in the ass is gone, which I really like. LOL:stretchgr

Ignoring the price, I really do like Opus....fresh or aged. Sure, they're totally different cigars with age on them, but then again MOST cigars are that way.

But of course, my biggest problem with them isn't the flavor--it's the price. There are only so many retardedly expensive cigars I'm willing to buy each year, so I don't ever seem to have many Opus around.
