Well I got back from a business trip and was happy to see my cigar of the month package from Empire, http://www.empirecigars.net/. Included in the package was an Ortega Serie D and decided that I should light it up and share my thoughts
hopefully you enjoy my quick review.
Cigar: Ortega Serie D No 7
Size: 5 x 46
Wrapper Color: Maduro
Wrapper: Mexico, San Andreas
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
prelight and uncut impressions
Its made by Pepin and the size and construction reminds me of a La Riqueza (not cabinet) with a slight box press to it: the cigars have nearly identical silhouettes, besides maybe the length. I didnt particularly enjoy staring at this barcode the entire time, which is pre-printed on the band.
1st third flavor and description
You definitely pick up a bit of that cocoa taste somewhat typical for a San Andreas wrapper. In addition, the first third of the cigar has a woody taste with a slight bitter coffee to it. Im not picking up much spice but interestingly there is a very slight and lingering minty menthol taste that coats your mouth after each puff that I noticed about an inch into the stick. The lingering minty menthol taste has the same sensation as I would characterize as spice. The cigar has a nearly perfect burn line.
2nd third flavor and description
In the second half, the bitter cocoa taste is still present and loses some of that woodiness. Im still getting that very slight lingering minty menthol with a spice like sensation, but it is actually more pronounced. So far its an enjoyable morning smoke.
final third flavor and description
The second half taste profile carries over into the final third with a syrupy sweetness. The woody and coffee taste from the first third pops back up. And as I approach the nub I get a tobacco taste.
overall
Its definitely more of a medium cigar that is enjoyable, worth the hour that it took to smoke. It is also fairly one dimensional. I dont think Ill rush out to purchase a box but would definitely pick up some other sizes to try. If youve also had one, Im interested in what you guys think Thank you for taking the time to read.
