  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My fiance and I closed on our first home yesterday and it has a pretty nice deck! I want to start saving for a good tabletop/floor propane or electric heater for next winter.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a particular model? Even just general advice on how to find the best kind for my needs. Really any help is appreciated lol

I have the same one from Home Depot for $99 in brown. The only PITA is that the tank cover needs to be lifted and lowered every time you want to cut the gas on/off. I took off the little table part so its easier to get to it. But honestly it works GREAT. Electric cant compare.

Since we sit by it, I cut the pole down a little... 6 inches or so.

Find a place that refills the tanks and make sure you have a spare. I found a place that fills up 20lbs on Tuesdays for $12 +tax. Made a huge difference. Blue rhino et al just give you like 14 lbs.

I use one of those plus a smaller 2 burner heater that mounts directly to a tank.

Those propane heaters work great. I smoke outside on my deck and I have a single burner that screws on a propane tank and have no issues. As was said before make sure you have an extra tank if you go that route.

Thought about one of these heaters. Do you actually feel warm in 20 degree weather??

I also cut the pole down on mine. I have a covered patio in the back, so I've been tossing around the idea of closing it in on 2 sides so the heat doesn't escape as fast.

How long does a tank usually last before it needs to be refilled?

if the win isn't blowing it pumps out a good amount of heat, so 30 degrees or so is just fine; I usually don't venture out if its much cooler than 40 though.

Thanks for the info guys. It looks like that is a good buy. I have looked at others that were much more expensive than that. BOTL saving me money yet again lol

I would also like to know how long a tank usually lasts.

as a side note, kudos on the new digs, man! o)
Thanks you sir!

On the single burner at an hour at a time on low or med at 3 or 4 nights a week I can go a couple months on a tank.

And congrats!

My wife just asked me last night if I wanted to get a heater like this to smoke so I can have some warmth in the garage. It sounds like a good one but I would prefer the 20 below days to go away so I can smoke outside!!

Congrats on the new house!

I smoke in my garage.....I bought a Lp torpedo heater but I rarely use it. I bought a presto heat dish from Costco that gets insanely hot for 60 dollars you can't go wrong.....my .02.

Congrats on the new house. Time to buy blinds, water softener salt and toiletries........lol

Used my heater for the first time last night. Boy did it keep me warm. Temperatures were down around 25-30, was out listening to the Stogie Geeks podcast for over an hour and I was warm the whole time. Very impressed!

Im just 60 or so miles up the road from you Fox.. I only needed/wanted a heater a couple of times this year..

When it got really cold, I went into the garage to smoke.. all I really needed was my llittle $19.99 electric space heater from Wal-Mart.. it wouldnt bring the temp in the garage up to 70 or anything.. but when it was 35 or higher outside, I could crack the garage door a little bit to keep it from getting too smokey inside... let the garage keep the wind off of me.. fire up the space heater.. and it was warm enough out there if I just kept a light jacket on, and a cap, to sit for an hour or so and enjoy a smoke.. There were a few days when it got down into the 20's that it was too cold to get comfortable no matter what I did.. but in those cases I either just sucked it up and suffered.. or didnt smoke.. I didnt think it was worth the time/effort/money to invest in a bigger heater..

We use those little coleman propane heaters that you attach directly to the propane bottle at our cabin in Colorado for space heat.. you can normally get them for less than $25 at the coleman store just north of gatlinburg.. or find them on sale at wal-mart in the outdoors section occasionally as well.. when the temps get down into the low 20's.. I can normally use the propane heaters to bring the temp back up to the high 40's or even the low 50's in a 20x12 room with just 1 of those running wide open for about 30 minutes..

anything below the low 20's... and I pack my junk and go home :)

I actually have 2 patio heaters, one of the tall ones and the other is the kind that hook right up to the propane tank. I use the small one when it is real cold because I aim it right at me. The tall one I use when it is in the 40's. It is perfect for that. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1361560158.054381.jpg

I have a tabletop model. It's pretty useless unless I put it an inch from me. I do not recommend it. I also cover my legs with an electric blanket, that works nicely.
