Pepin Blue Lancero:
6-7/8 X 42 Limited Vitola
5th cigar smoked from box #64
The cigar is very well crafted with a velvety smooth wrapper. I was hoping that Pepin would come out with the Lancero as a regular production vitola, but I'll have to settle with the 2 boxes I got from Puff N Stuff in GA.
The blend tastes in between the Blue & the Black, something that is really nice in this format. It's a tad bit stronger than most of the Blue's but in no way is it as full flavored as a Black, but it does have some issues. This is a very young cigar, rolled way back in May 2007. The first one I smoked was very nice but now it's really starting to show some problems with being young. The flavors are very muted while the power of the ligero is coming out in front.
I like to smoke my cigars slowly and usually a Lancero owuld take me an hour to smoke but this one doesn't like to stay lit. My humidor is reading right at 63% @ 62 degrees, but even at that range the Lancero is not happy. I'm forced to do rapid draws on it and it's really an unappealing to have a ligero hit washout the subtle flavors that this cigar has.
When the lancero does mellow out, I do expect the subtle tea and cinnamon flavors to be more present than the almost pure capsicum to disapear out of the first half.
The lancero does show a lot of potential as being a very refined cigar later, but as it is right now, I would have to say it's very rough. It's not a cigar that you could pick up and just light up and be wow!ed by. If I remember correctly, the first batches of Tatuaje Noellas I smoked a few years ago were the same way, but after 6 months it became one of my favorite cigars.
Let's see what the #1 Pepin whore thinks...I have a couple heading his way at the end of the week.
