So my wife took our son and went with her parents to some dirt track racing this evening. I had to work :disappoin. But when I got home I had a solid couple of hours to spend and what better way than firing up a cigar. I decided tonight to have a Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro Robusto. This cigar is the first cigar that I really liked and I smoked a crap ton of them when I first started getting into cigars. I haven't had one in a while and felt it was time to revisit an old friend.
First off these cigars will never win any kind of beauty contest. They're lumpy and often have a slight kilter when looking at them. They're not packed full of tobacco, but they're not under-filled either...there's a nice springy consistency to them. The wrapper is a chocolate color with a slight oiliness and a few smallish veins present. The aroma is my favorite...a pungent barnyard.
I scalp the cap and am met with a slightly loose draw. Never had a tight draw on one of these so I guess I shouldn't complain, but I would prefer a little bit tighter. Flavors of rich, slightly nutty tobacco are present.
Takes to flame easily and produces copious amounts of thick smoke. The core flavors are rich tobacco and walnut with a peppery coffee on the retro-hale. There is a hint of sweetness on the finish.
The burn is a little wavy from time to time and requires some touch-ups here and there, but no major problems. The ash is flaky for sure, but holds well enough.
Into the second third flavors remain mostly the same...this is not a complex cigar. The pepper had died away and the walnut is the main player here with some tobacco in the background, coffee through the nose, and a touch of sweetness to wrap it all up.
If I have one consistent complaint about these cigars, it's the band. They're on the big side and while at least they're not gaudy, they don't come off easily. In fact I tore a piece of the wrapper off when I was removing the band from this cigar...:angryteet.
This cigar ended in much the way it began...flavorful, but uncomplicated. This isn't a cigar that's going to knock your socks off with complexity or force. But I like the flavors and would rank it a solid medium in body so you can smoke one after another without it going to your stomach. The price is nice too. I think I paid about $4.50 at my local shop, though they can be had cheaper on the internet. The draw does mean you need to take your time and make sure you're not heating the cigar too much so as to sour the flavors. Definitely recommend it to those new to the hobby or if you're looking for an inexpensive smoke while doing yard work and such.
