Because the world is a pretty shitty place. The stress that actors and people in the spotlight are under has to be even worse....
I think it's more that uber-creative types are by nature more prone to deviance (in the technical sense of the word). They're more likely to think, feel, and do things that ordinary folk aren't.

Add to that the idea that they're surrounded by yes men, and know they "should" feel on top of the world, but feel no real sense of purpose, accountability, etc, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Pretty accurate here. Those who choose this lifestyle are not free of accountability so when they screw it all up they have to take with the responsibility as well. Was he a great actor...of course. Did he have a choice...of course he did and just because he was famous doesn't count towards his demise as everybody has a choice in life and some make it count while others don't. The tragedy is that he had enough money to fix his habit and not become one of those who go in for rehab and then come out again like it's a turnstyle.
