BoM Sept '14 & BoY 2014
Guys weekend day two and about to start the day tackling this sexy beast
Date: 9/20/2014
Review: PSJC Blind Review 4-A
Size: 6x52 toro I believe
Pairing: shitty coffee
Cut: Xi3 redwood
Appearance/Construction: a nice toro that is oily, toothy, and soft to the touch. I like soft slightly squishy sticks. This one has a couple spots of concern where it's really soft, but it springs right back. Triple cap looks nice.
Aroma Pre-Light: it had a sweet smell, but I'm sniffing so hard trying to nail it that I can't smell anymore. So I'll say a subtle sweet smell, nothing overwhelming. I did pick up cocoa after cutting the cap
Cold draw: a veggie taste, very open draw just the way I like it
Light: xikar double flame....out of fluid but noticed before I started this time
First impression: the wrapper put a nice creamy(no homo) taste on my lips. The first puff after roasting the foot with my double touch pulls easily and my mouth is filed with tasty, slightly spicy smoke. A refreshing start as toros aside from liga no9 aren't really my thing. The retro wakes me up with a borderline eye watering rush of spice and pepper that isn't harsh, just spicy. I love that kind of retro especially at 1030am
First third: in the first handful of puffs the spice is the key player. Peppery with a background of a toast type flavor. My immediate thought it nc, leaning nica, maybe Don pepin? The soft feel would say otherwise, but the flavor is similar. It's still early.
Coffee sip...
First third continues spicy, but it's relaxing a bit. Once my nostrils cool off I hope to find some nice subtleties. The spice is clearly the dominant player.
Everything burning nice and I'm sitting on the porch looking out over the water
Thinking how if everything works out that I'll never leave Michigan. As grimy as Detroit is, my neighborhood is great, my family all lives here, and there's just something about southeast Michigan folk that gives me a sense of home every time I return from work travels. Not to mention, the northern half of the state is the greatest place in the country to be during summer. In land lake water(i hate swimming in salt water), boats, beaches, tubing, golf, bonfires, fishing, and introducing my kids to all of it! I have a two year old daughter and seven month old son. I love showing them new things and teaching them to treat life as an adventure. Got a long, fun road ahead....great thoughts
So, cigar still burning perfectly. The spice is still dominant, but it's transitioned to more of a sweet spice than a pepper. Enjoyable, but it'd like to see some other flavors arrive to the party. A creaminess trying to break through but the spice dominating like the USA did to Japan post pearl harbor
May need slight touch up but going to give it a minute
Ha, fixed itself as I was loading picture
First third summary: spice, spice, and more spice. May have served better after we eat ribeyes this evening but I'm ok with it. A couple flavors tried to breakthrough but to no avail.
Entering second third: wow, spice just fell off a cliff. I might still technically be in first third nearing second, but the crazy transition I just experienced tells me I'm headed somewhere else. May take a couple spice free puffs to get my senses back. The first third spice was borderline overwhelming and deff wouldn't suit anyone who doesn't really like spicy smokes.
Draw I'd still wide open and effortless. I love open draws. I know a lot of people prefer some resistance but I like to take long slow draws with a lot of smoke. Some to blow out and the rest to retro. My style is my style I suppose
I would almost say there is no spice now. I can still feel the effects of the first third in my sinuses, but my tongue is smoothed back out and my nostrils retro effortlessly.
Due to the soft feel, the ash doesn't hold on more than an inch. I lapped the first ash, happens to me all the time because I love seeing the ash grow but always wait ten seconds too long lol
Starting to get a leathery cinnamon flavor profile. Rich and smooth. Enjoyable. Burn line going awry but will see what happens before hitting with the torch.
Some peanut jumps in. Just slightly. I would say most people would like the second third a lot more than the first.
This is relaxing. Sitting with my buddy Matt, on the water, smoking my passion. Life is great right now. Job going great. Got a beautiful wife, lucked out on that one like a son of a bitch. Two happy healthy kids. No debt aside from mortgage and one small and necessary car payment(worked our asses off for that one last year, it sucked but so worth it now. I highly recommend anyone to make the sending sacrifice to get the financial freedom as soon as possible. I'm not a rich guy, but I definitely had to pass up a lot of things the last couple years to eliminate credit card debt, medical bills, wife student loans, and other dumb interest bearing bills. My credit score went up 200 points and I just refinanced my house to eliminate pmi and $120 month with ease. Used a lil Dave ramsey, smart decisions, and sine common sense. Not to mention my wife and I used teamwork and fought a lot too get through it
Needed to relight. Went out completely. Burn was going bad and lead to that. A touch up would have avoided the relight probably but I wanted to test her.
A sweet cream has joined in too. The second third is enjoyable. Not unbelievable, but nice.
Right at halfway and another repair needed. In the midst of the super soft spots so no surprise here. Quick roasting around the edges fires her right back up with minimal damage.
It's a smooth cream. Nothing complex, just laid back. Wishing some other flavors jump in, but nothing.
Took a bacon and sausage break. My dad owns a sausage factory. Best breakfast sausage on the planet. Started working there when I was 10 making boxes and packing sausage. Also had a paper route at 10. My dad taught me work ethic early. Thank god for him and that. Something I see lacking with the current generation. Not saying I enjoyed it at 10, but I always had some money in my pocket and in the long run I learned that you work for what you want, period. Can't wait for Obama to buy it for you
As the second third is closing I reflect on this portion. The spice disappeared and I thought it was bowing out for other flavors to rush in but they didn't. Almost like I'm smoking just to smoke as most flavors just aren't there right now. Not bad, just not awesome. Like a smooth sweet tobacco taste and that's about it. It's a rich smoke, just smoke. Couple touch ups and relight but the burn has leveled back out and the draw is still perfect for me.
Third third starting:
I'm going into the final third going for a grand finale, hoping at least. It's never been unenjoyable but hadn't been epic either. Just average smoke with a great atmosphere.
Starting with a subtle creamy spice and a long leathery finish. Thats good!
This is pretty nice. A mild red pepper, cinnamon spice with a creamy exhale and a lil nutty flavor. Definitely rounding into form. Want to puff faster, but remind myself to maintain pace. It's really good right now.
Slight touch up more out of precaution since going bad too far now leads to major heat issues so monitoring burn carefully.
Retro is easy and smooth. Can push a lot through the sinuses which is great for me since I retro every puff and love it. Took awhile to learn and get used to but I highly recommend starting for anyone who doesn't. Changed my flavor recognition severely for the better.
Overall Impression/Final thoughts: epic finish, great flavor rode all the way home. Spicy start, boring middle, amazing finale.
Smoke time: 1h40m
Scoring: my scale isn't anything professional, so don't look at the score and think junk. I think on most scales the difference of 88 vs 92 is too acute whereas it should be more varied
Appearance and Presentation: 17/20, not my typical shade being a little light, but nice and inviting
Lighting and Burning Properties: 10/15, soft spots led to some issues in middle, but overall ok
Construction Properties: 24/30 same with soft spots
Taste Properties: 27/35, great finish saved the day
Total: 78/100 not to be confused with normal scale.
Def not Cuban, leaning nica, maybe epc? Only had one before but I know Jim likes them so I'm leaning that way out of petite knowledge, but really have no clue
This was revealed to be...Jim?
Thanks Jim, others to follow
