BoM Sept '14 & BoY 2014
Starting off guys weekend right
A nice looking robusto size stick to start the morning
Date: 9/19/2014
Review: PSJC Blind Review 4-B
Size: 5x50
Pairing: shitty coffee
Cut: Xi3 redwood
Appearance/Construction: a nice tan wrapper with average veins, nice triple cap, and an oily sheen. Firm to the touch
Aroma Pre-Light: mostly earthy. A little chilly outside so sniffing this thing is freezing me nostrils
Cold draw: salty on the lips with a leather earth component on the tongue. Tight draw
Light: xikar double flame....fuck! Out of fuel half lit. What an inconvenience....
Find my fuel, it's in cold car. This is a pain....but now we got it. Nice ambient smell, fresh and smooth
First impression: I picked the right one out of the bag for a morning smoke. Draw loosening quickly. A nice grassy flavor with minimal spice. Kind of what you hope to grab at 930am with coffee. Time to sit back and relax. Retrohale is refreshing with a little spice and a lot of fresh grass and hay
First third: a lot more grass, a little wood, and still the nice spice on the retro(I retro every puff if wondering). A slight cocoa flavor emerged, let's see if it lasts. An intense sweetness just mixed with the spice on the retro, lit me nostrils up beautifully. Burning clean which surprises me after the bs i had to do to get started...amateur
While smoking, I'm with my life long buddy. He's smoking an AFuente. Known the guy since I was seven. Always a great dude to share a smoke with. My 3 year old nephew, Giovanni, is riding his big wheel while my brother and SmokinMike are headed to town to get some groceries for guys weekend. My father and nephew Jaxon will be here this afternoon. Good times
First third continues and the sweetness has mixed with the spice wonderfully. Definitely enjoying this. While I type that I think, insecurely, how this better not be a yard gar Jim!!!
Some cedar has mixed in and the strength has picked up slightly. I'd say I'm cruising on medium, maybe very slightly higher. The finish is long and the flavor suits nicely on the palette. The lips are a little leathery from the oil off the wrapper.
First third summary: a variety from grass to cocoa(tiny bit) to a nice sweetness with mellow spice. Enjoyable for the 43° morning. Ash holding nicely. Burn slightly uneven but prob related to the coolness now. No biggie.
Ash fell off immediately after this pic
Entering second third:
I notice the cocoa popped back in immediately, awesome! The spice has maintained nicely and is a great finish to the flavor. Everything has balanced out and is working together well. Slight grass, a lil cocoa, good spice, slightly sweet, with long finish. Maybe a lil cinnamon or baking spice like cookies. Maybe.
Burn has gotten perfect with no touch up. Love when that happens.
My nephew is telling stories about prechool then immediately runs off to take every ball out of the garage and throw them on the lawn
The flavors have leveled of and got a little boring. Just average tasting for the majority of the second third. Nothing much to describe at this point.
Third third starting:
Pepper has joined the party
The third third was disappointing. While the flavors never got bad, they just didn't excite. I love a great finish and this just leveled off and stood still. Enjoyable but lost the chance to light up the scoreboard.
Overall Impression/Final Notes: a good stick, not great. Thought Cuban out of the gate with the grassy but quickly changed to nc the rest of the way. A nice morning stick but not something I'd seek out to buy. Robos don't excite me enough for purchase anyways since they are like league average when so many unique vitolas are out there. I couldn't guess a brand but I'd say roughly $6 stick?
Smoke time: 1h30m, I'm slow
Scoring: my scale isn't anything professional, so don't look at the score and think junk. I think on most scales the difference of 88 vs 92 is too acute whereas it should be more varied
Appearance and Presentation: 15/20
Lighting and Burning Properties: 14/15. Not perfect, but self correcting all the way through
Construction Properties: 26/30
Taste Properties: 20/35, complexity fell off a cliff but the flavors it had were nice
Total: 75/100 not to be confused with normal scale. I'd call 75 above average but not legendary
This was revealed to be...Jim?
