Quesada Oktoberfest Bavarian
Size: 5-1/2 x 52
Wrapper: Cibao Valley, Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Cuban seed Dominican Criollo, Olor Viso, and Ligero
About:
Quesada cigars are distributed in the United States by SAG Imports, a company created by the Quesada family in 1993 to handle U.S. distribution of cigars made in their MATASA factory.
I copied the following information from the SAG Imports website about the Quesada Oktoberfest cigars:
Oktoberfest is one of the most famous festivals in the world. The yearly celebration attracts millions of people to Munich to partake in the festival, with millions more enjoying the famous beer produced for it.
Traditionally, there is a cigar tent for Aficionados to enjoy a smoke with their brew. This year, the Quesada family has blended a cigar specifically to be paired with the flavorful Marzen-style beer produced for Oktoberfest.
Blended with a variety of flavorful Dominican tobaccos, the Quesada Oktoberfest is available in very limited quantities in two sizes: the Bavarian (51/2 x 52) and the Uber (6 x 65)
Pre-light:
Upon examining the cigar, I was immediately struck by the deep, dark brown wrapper. It was toothy, and had a distinct and visible oily sheen. The toothiness actually gave the wrapper a bit of texture as I ran my fingers over it. I noticed two small veins at about the halfway point, and other than that there were no visible issues with the wrapper.
The band was striking in that it was white with the red, black, and gold colors of the German flag running around it. It really stood out against the dark shade of the wrapper.
Upon lighting, the start of the cigar was very interesting. Despite thick mouthfuls of smoke, all of the flavor sensations I was experiencing were all at the front of my palate and the tip of my tongue.
The cigar started off with a very buttery flavor with a touch of light spice at the very tip of my tongue. The retrohale was similarly buttery, though the spice was a little bit more pronounced.
The ash was solid, and was a medium-dark gray with some very dark striations.
2/3:
As the first third transitioned into the second third, a strong leathery component came to the forefront of the flavor profile. The slight spiciness was still there, and a nice touch of sweetness started to come through on the wrapper. This sweetness on my lips was an excellent compliment to the leather and subtle spice flavors I was tasting.
3/3:
The biggest change that occurred in the final third was that the leather flavors intensified, with a proportional increase in the spiciness that had been in the background in the first two thirds of the cigar. The smoke at this point was almost what I would describe as chewy. The rich leatheriness was present all over my palate, and it remained in the long finish as well. I smoked this cigar right to the end, and the construction remained spot-on, with no bitter flavors down to the nub.
Overall:
This was another solid Quesada release with a good flavor profile. The leathery component that came in during the second and final thirds of the cigar really agreed with my palate. My only gripe about this line is that to me The Bavarian at 5-1/2 x 52 is the only smokeable vitola.
If you have not been able to tell by my previous reviews, I am not a fan of what I call the comically large that get up to 58 and 60 ring gauge and beyond. That being said, the Uber at 6 x 65 is not something that I would typically even give a second look to. I would love to try this blend in some more conventional sizes maybe a corona gorda, lancero, or even something like a petit robusto.
There will be an estimated 1000 boxes total for the two sizes produced, so if either size of this cigar sounds interesting to you, you better jump on them now while you can.

AROMA: I found a strong leathery component in the prelight aroma, with some elements of pencil shavings as well. There was a slight sweetness in the aroma at the foot of the cigar.
TASTE: There was a pleasant light earthiness with an almost top-soil like quality in my nose. In addition to the earthiness, there was a slight touch of spice and cinnamon as well.
