Quesada Seleccion España Robusto
Size: 5x52
Wrapper: Arapiraca (Ecuador)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Connecticut Broadleaf, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
About:
According to the SAG Imports website (www.sagimports.com), the Selección España was developed for the Spanish market to fill the demand for alternatives to Cuban cigars. The Quesada family worked with tobacconists from Spain to develop this cigar specifically and exclusively for Spain.
Pre-light:
The wrapper had a beautiful light-carmel color, and was perfect with no major veins or blemishes. Also, the cigar was very-well packed with no hard or soft spots at all.
Prelight Aroma had some very pleasant notes of cedar with some nice sweet and musky notes. The aroma at the foot of the cigar has a molasses-like sweetness with some definite notes of cinnamon.
Prelight taste had a definite top-soil like note to it, with nice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg there as well.
1/3:
The cigar started right off with two distinct flavor layers. There was a very nice creamy-caramel character with a hint of spice that hit at the back of my tongue and the rear of my palate. What was interesting was that the attack was not sharp like black pepper, but rather subtle, more like a green chile type of spicincess. This spiciness was slight, and blended very well with the creamy-caramel notes.
2/3:
Even though I was enjoying the cigar in the outside section of the Herfquarters where there was a steady breeze blowing, the burn remained razor-sharp. The spiciness from the fist third has moved to a slight peppery type of spice, which also presented a sharpness to the retrohale. In addition to the creamy-caramel characteristics, a little bit of grassiness entered the flavor profile as well.
3/3:
In the final third the spiciness, though subtle, still mellowed out. I also got a really nice caramelized-sugar taste, and the nose was what I would best describe as “meaty”. The body of the cigar built up to medium at the end, with the flavors never intensifying to the point of being harsh. I smoked this cigar until I burned my fingers, and it never heated up or became bitter.
Overall:
This was a very enjoyable cigar with a nice evolution of flavors – I recommend that you seek these out and give them a try. The Selección España is also available in a Short Robusto measuring 4x50 and a Corona measuring 5-1/2 by 42. I have smoked and enjoyed samples of these as well, and look forward to getting my hands on more.
