  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I am trying my hand at a beer can chicken for dinner tonight. I was asking a friend of mine yesterday who is a real Chef about what kind of beer to use. He has suggested a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I was wondering if anyone has made a beer can chicken. I was wondering what kind of beer they had used on there beer can chicken? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. :roundtheh

I make it all the time and useually use whatever canned beer is in the house. Its never made a real difference if the beer was Bud or Oscar Blues Ten Fidy. For me what really matters is what beer I DRINK with the chicken.

As you know - the beer more or less prohibits the chicken from drying out during the cooking process. When checked after cooking the beer can was never more then half full and I'm using roasters 4-6 pounds.

I figure part of the fun might be trying different beers and seeing if you can pick up different flavor profiles from different beers.

Have fun and enjoy!

I second this. I like this method as well for keeping the chicken super moist. I started fooling around with different kinds of juices and wines as well for different flavors.

I have done many Beer Can Chickens, did another Sunday. It does not matter what you use; you can use soda beer or water. Some folks might be able to pick up taste differences but I can not. I do have one bit of advice, do not use a stout. I did this week and I also pour some seasoning in the can and the beer kept foaming over.

There is a book the BBQ Bible that I use a lot.

Never made a beer can chicken...but that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a great beer. I would drink that and use something cheaper for the chicken.

Spot on my friend. That's the beauty of this recipe. You can use whatever is in the fridge from the High Life(IMO the best of the bargain brands) to that fantastic Sierra. The flavor will come from the charcoal and your seasonings. Hell every time you see a cooking show they always use the standard mass produced stuff.

Yep, I haven't done one (yet), but I wouldn't use a good beer for this. I've got some cans of Busch Lite or some such that sits in my fridge because someone left them there and I would use those. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

does Sierra Nevada Come in cans? I've only had the bottles.

I'm going to make one this weekend, and pair it with my Beer Bread. You may not be able to tell the difference between the beers in the chicken, but it'a a huge difference in the bread.

I've made beer can chicken several times. I also have mixed in a little apple or pineapple juice to give it a bit a sweetness that blends really well with a spicy rub.

It doesn't matter what beer or wine you use, the seasoning matters more. I find the tallboy cans work better, but you gotta pour(read drink) half of the beer first.

Well I have decided to go with the SN Pale Ale. I will post later tonight or tommorow with pics and results for everyone interested. I have also decided to pair it with red beans and rice. I think it will make a good dinner, but we will see.
