  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Question for our Bourbon loving brothers

I like bourbon and some blended whiskeys typically neat, occasionally on the rocks (only a few).

My favorite is bourbon Woodford Reserve. It also seems to pair well with most cigars I smoke.
Makers Mark is decent too. I think they use wheat as opposed to rye in the MM which smoothes it out some.

I have tried others but for some reason none of the others stand out in my mind right now that can compare to the Woodford.

In an effort to be a little more cost conscious at this time I would appreciate any suggestions as to lower priced bourbons on par with Woodford (if there is such a thing) or just a favorite that you think pairs well with most sticks.

Thanks,
Rick

Try Elijah Craig 12 year old or Elmer T. Lee. I believe both are around the same price or less then Woodford and IMO are better.

Ancient Ancient Aged 10yr is a good cheap bourbon.

From the Van Winkle line: 90 Proof Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbon 10 Year for around $30 bucks for 750 mil, for $20 you can get the same size bottle of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Both are really good, the Van Winkle would be my choice. It's not as smooth as the Pappy but it's damn good.

Edit: Almost forgot, Makers Mark is also well worth the 20 bucks or so. I like the Red.

Having tried enough bourbons to feel like a borderline alcoholic, I'd second (or third) the brothers who have mentioned Buffalo Trace. In NC you can get it for $22 a bottle which is quite a steal IMO.

The other two I'd suggest are Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve and Four Roses single barrel. Both are closer to what your paying for Woodford Reserve, but great alternatives. If you're quite fond of drinking your amber nectar neat (as do I) the Four Roses SB is absolutely among the best bourbons on the market. I recall reading a review of it on a bourbon forum and the general consensus was that if you didn't like that stuff, you probably don't know what good bourbon tastes like. If only they sold it in my state....

I like Booker Noes Single Barrel, but it is fairly expensive and high proof; ~120 - 127.

sometimes you get what you pay for. i, personally, pay a little extra for blantons because it tastes best to me. it's from the trace area. usually 40-50 bucks, but worth it.

Rick, I know you said Bourbon, as opposed to Whiskey, but since you mentioned the possible wheat aspect of Maker's Mark....

If you like wheat, you should try Small Batch Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey.

Bernheim is the only type of straight whiskey which uses wheat. For me the result is a full-bodied, sweet, yet smooth whiskey that goes well with cigars.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. There’s a bunch to choose from. I think I may have to maintain the bottle of the Woodford in the house then start with post #2 and just work my way through all of them. Seems like the logical thing to do. Cheers! :bottle:
