  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've never been sure about the term "strong" or "full body", etc. I always assumed that it was referring to the flavor profile. Sometimes it seems that people use these terms to describe the nicotine content. Is it possible to have a strong tasting cigar with low nicotine or a very mild cigar with high nicotine?

I've heard so many different explanations on this from cigar smokers on this and I would like to hear some from people on here. From I understand (and from the definition of 'full bodied') full-bodied means 'full of flavor' and 'strong' is referring to the overall strength of nicotine. HOWEVER, most of the guys I talk to in a cigar shop, and a few that are cigar/pipe smokers refer to full bodied and strong meaning the same thing. I would be interesting to hear from someone whose a seasoned smoker and their opinions on this...

From what I know, it depends on how the tobacco is treated and such. Different methods yield different nicotine amounts and flavors. Nicotine is in the oils, last I remember. So, a really oily cigar, which is usually full bodied in flavor (from personal experience), will have a high nicotine count.

Nicotine content is something that can be measured...if you want to expense the time to go down to your HMO and have a urinalysis done but that seems to be a bit over the top. With such variations of how the tobacco is grown and adding to how quickly the sugar content is released into the bloodstream from the cigar has as much to do with "strength" as anything. There is always the discussion of body/strength/finish etc. to add to the confusion of how we define these terms when even the Manufacturers trip over their collective Johnsons when talking about it. I tend to follow the narrative of mild, medium and full when I think of cigars and since I've been smoking cigars for 50 years a mild cigar isn't going to get it done for me so I tend to smoke full bodied cigars. Any cigar that can hold a finish on my palate is going to interest me....with a light finish you don't get to enjoy the overall experience of what a cigar brings...you might as well smoke a machine made cigar and call it a day IMO. I try to drink a libation that is going to "hold" the finish on my tongue just a little longer....something like Amarula or Baileys ....a White Russian is perfect with a cigar as it will hold the finish and protect your tissues in your mouth from spontaneously combusting if you tend to draw a heavy load ( that didn't sound right, did it? ) and a good long finish is almost like having a religious experience.
