  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Brothers,

I still consider myself a relative newbie and from articles in Cigar publications to websites to this site, particularly the post regarding 'Refining Your Palette', I am continuing to learn how to "taste" a cigar.

That said, I found this tool (on another site just prior to discovering this site). I saved it as a ZIP file (the PDF was too large to post). If you have winzip (get trial download here: http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm).

Hope you find it useful.

That's Colin (Gamely?) rating sheet I think. He's been on DWSC a bunch, and they have that form on their website too. Seems like a nice system.

Yes it is his. His name is printed across the bottom. I take no credit for it other than posing it here as I have found it to be a very useful tool.

I got to ask a question, do you guys fill this sheet out after every cigar you smoke or just the one's that are special. Next question. Why?

Sorry, man. I didn't mean it to sound like I was calling you out on it at all.:youarethe Just letting people know that the DWSC guys did a great interview with him where they used the review sheet with him.

No offense taken. I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

I have only filled one out a couple of times. What I have found is that it helped me to at least learn how to detect the tastes a little better. The majority of the time I simple say... mmmm, tastes good!

Yeah, I kept track for a few months and then got behind, and now, I'm over it. Because of my commitment issues I don't buy boxes yet. I'm still playing the field and making sure what I really want to have before I do.

I saved it as a ZIP file (the PDF was too large to post).
The ZIP file was 68k, and the unzipped PDF was 96k. Then I looked at the original site and found the original posted file is only 133k.

Those are ALL small file sizes; it'd probably have been just fine to post up the original PDF.

Oh and speaking of which, if anyone ever tastes a cigar with these flavors...

Steak - Ham - Onion - Milk - Fish - Bread

...then I suggest you stop storing your cigars in the veggie crisper of your fridge and go buy yourself a proper humidor!

I tried loading the original file and was unsuccessful based on size of file.

A steak and onion ceegar, you'd not have to worry 'bout smoking on an empty stomach!

I did that for a year, every single cigar I smoked, I wrote down tasting notes, construction, location smoked, what I drank, whom I was with...yada yada yada. Then I got to thinking, "what the hell are you doing"? I was spending more time on trying to figure out what I was going to write than I did enjoying the cigar and talking to my friends.

That being said, I still have that journal of 687 cigars that year that I smoked, it's funny to see some of the shit I burned and how great I thought they were! :rolling:

I have never keep a tasting journal. seems like to much trouble. but i do keep the cigar labels and will sometimes write little quick notes about the cigar on the back of it and give it my own rating. that is the extent for me.

I keep a tasting journal, but I don't use it with every cigar I smoke; generally, I only take notes on the ones that (A) are new to me, or (B) I purchased with the intention of sitting down by myself to pay attention to. So far, I've only got about 50 entries for 2007, which is only a fraction of the cigars I've smoked this year.

I enjoy making my reviews--it's part of the hobby to me. But I don't really share them with anyone, and I certainly don't try to pick out flavors like "milk" and "bread" and "fish". LOL!

I must say that I like the form for keeping notes on cigars. Most of my introspective smoking is done either on walks or on the road (driving). this has prevented me from keeping a running log as much as I would like to.

I think that I am going to try to start a journal this year however, because it would be fun to see what I think at different dates and times (since I smoke often).

Thanks
