  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Recommend a V-cutter

Couldn't find anything particularly focused on V-cutters so if this exists please feel free to point me there and I'll delete, but I'm looking for a decent V-cutter that is in the lower range of prices as I don't necessarily "need" one and with the wedding around the corner my fiancé won't be to happy with me spending extra on "nonsense" lmao.

Any advice/opinions are appreciated!

Thanks

Colibri makes one that runs about $25 and Xikar has one for about $30. It you want a quality cutter with a warranty I would go with one of those.
If that is above what you are thinking, you can buy a bunch of cheapies for like 3 bucks a piece. Personally that is the kind I have. I don't use it a whole lot, but it has held up nicely for a $3 dollar cutter.

I have both a Xikar and a Colibri V-cutter. I use the Xikar one more often though. The only time I ever have a problem with the Xikar is when I use it on a Padron for some reason, always cracks the cap. That being said, other than than they are both great, and as said earlier, the Colibri is a much deeper V.

I just use a $4 cheap one I bought at a B&M. I use it 99% of the time, and have had no problems with it. I would suggest going that route first. If you like it, fine. If not, you're only out a few bucks.
This. I picked one up from a cigar shop. I think it was $1.99 or possibly 2.99. Worked great for over a year. Then I lost it. Need to go back and pick up another one.

Hmmmm alright I may try a real cheapie first, and then if it's crap purchase a better one...I was thinking that the cheapies may ruin a stick but if you've had luck I'll trust your judgement

Yeah, go with the cheap ones. I bought some off of ebay for like $3 with free shipping and they are working great. The one from Famous is too shallow and didn't last very long, only about 6 months for me and then fell apart.

I generally would recommend Xikar over Colibri, however for V-Cutter, Colibri seems to have a better V-Cutter option, it's pretty heavy weight. Whereas, the Xikar is a keychain model.

Alot of the v - cutters are to shallow look around before you buy here's one that is good https://www.famous-smoke.com/hardwood v cutter/item 15669
This is a "copy" of the Boston V Cutter which is called. ..Lil Guy...which I bought 12 years ago and at that time cost $100..which was worth it because it cuts the same today as it did when I bought it...perfect. I also bought the copy and it lost its ability to cut after just a few months. ..one gets what they pay for. Incidentally the Lil Guy has a lifetime warranty. ...and the "cats eye" cut is the best of any out there.
The tabletop Boston Cutter was something I used at a B&M in Framingham, MA....Watch City Cigar...loved it so much that I bought it as well in 1998 to the tune...wait for it...$750!!! Yeah, that's when I had some extra money to burn but I swear this cutter is amazing...4 notches for straight cuts up to a 60 RG and and 2 other Cats Eye cuts...large and small. I bought the Lil Guy a few years later because I wanted a unit to travel with. This hobby has broken me!!!

I have the Colibri, the fake Lil Guy and the cheapo plastic ones.

I prefer the Colibri, but it is heavy and the rubberized surfaces don't hold up over time. The tiny screws have also come loose on me and I had to locktite them in place.

The fake Lil Guy is a tank. I have a couple of them. One I had to take apart and clean out some wood edges from the block with a file as it wasn't quite right. The only problem with this one is that it's a little hard to clean out the cut piece. A golf tee works great to push it out.

Either way, you can't go wrong with the end result.
