  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I just finished Cigar #5 -- as I decided to take a different approach. Honestly, I'm an afternoon/evening cigar smoker, and have in my 8 months of cigars never done a morning cigar. Until this morning.

I went to the humidor & there was #5. Thought "what the hell, give it a shot." I took the cigar out, went to the car, and off to Starbucks I went. I ordered my usual Quad Non-fat Vanilla Latte, went on campus (IU) and found my favorite out-of-the-way bench.

Once seated in the cool morning breeze, I pulled out #5 and did the usual pre-light inspection. A nice milk chocolate, oily sheen and sweet aroma started promising. My only concern was a large leaf vein that stretched the length of the cigar -- but the construction itself looked to be solid.

That was until I made my initial clip with my Palio.

Immediately, the fresh cut started to unravel -- and even with my best efforts to control the leaf from unwrapping at the cut, it became apparent that I was going to battle throughout the smoke.

I toasted and lit, and off we went. The draw was excellent and produced a full (but not heavy) smoke. The taste was a bit harsh to start, but softened after the first three or four draws. The flavors were not as distinct as many other cigars -- almost just a straight tobacco flavor, with a slight leather undertone. But I was waiting for some other flavors to emerge early, but unfortunately, they never materialized.

The vein I mentioned earlier became a problem. The burn started to canoe and despite constant efforts to even out, the burn would never really correct on its own. I fought this burn issue to the very end.

The ash was inconsistent as well. The multishaded ash was attractive in color, but the flakiness was just too "weak." As I inspected the ash, I noticed what to be fairly large gaps running in the middle -- and once I ashed for the first time, these gaps were very apparent. I'm unsure what the gaps were, but it looked as if the rolling was loose and created larger than normal pockets of tobacco-less cigar.

The flavors never materialized. I wonder if the coffee I was drinking affected the flavors I was trying to experience. Perhaps the drink was just an inappropriate match for this cigar. What I remember in the flavor is just a mellow, consistent leathery tobacco taste -- no nuttiness, no chocolate, nothing....

As I drew to a close with this cigar, I was content with the experience, although the cigar made me work too hard to really enjoy. I will give this cigar another chance -- but under different circumstances with a different drink pairing.

1. Appearance - 14/15: Beautiful color and sheen -- but w/ a big vein
2. Ash - 6/10 - good coloring, weak structure, and big gaps
3. Draw - 10/10 - never a problem
4. Burn - 6/10 - never had to re-light, but constant arcing and too much work
5. Smoke - 8/10 - full
6. Flavor/Blend - 15/20 - consistent but no depth
7. Uniqueness - 7/10 - just average, nothing that stands out
8. Finish - 11/15 - left me with an "it's ok" feeling

To begin with a quick summary, this cigar reminded me of the last cigar in the contest, only bigger and less spicy. I enjoyed it, but it did not "wow" me the way that some of the others have.

Appearance: 13/15
As usual for a cigar supplied by Benzo, I had to break out my abacus to count the caps on this stick. I think Benzo has some sort of obsession with the number 3...Anyway, my cigar was smooth with a couple of medium-sized veins. The veins detracted from the beauty.

Draw: 10/10
The pre-light draw gave me no trouble, and led me to believe there would be plenty of earthy and woody flavors in this cigar. The draw was never tight or loose. Through this contest, I've begun noticing that the draw of a cigar means more to my overall experience of smoking it than I ever thought. A tight draw is something that you just can't overcome without fixing it--your smoke is going to suck. So I'm glad the draw on this stick was good.

Smoke: 10/10
There was plenty of sweet-smelling white smoke filling the air as I smoked. I enjoyed this cigar on a screen porch with some friends, and one of them commented on how good the smoke smelled. They usually don't care for the smell of my cigars, so that was a pretty awesome bonus.

Ash: 6/10
The ash for this stick was exactly the same as the last stick: it started off dark-gray, but became something closer to white (with a yellow tinge) as I got further into the stick. It held on for approximately an inch before falling off. Not the best ash, but not the worst either. I'd expect the ash to hold on longer for this vitola than the previous vitola, so the score has to be adjusted.

Burn: 7/10
There were times when it burned unevenly and I had to touch it up, but for the most part the burn was good.

Flavor: 15/20
In the first inch, there was a lot of spice mixed with earthy and woody undertones. I hoped the spice would remain throughout, but the cigar soon became predominantly earthy, with the spice and wood remaining in the background. The background flavors were soon joined by a leather taste. It wasn't bad at all, but I was disappointed that the spice died down so much. The flavors stayed consistent throughout the cigar after that initial change.

Finish: 13/15
The flavors did not stay on my palate for long, which is something of a blessing when they're earthy. I've always enjoyed a good earthy cigar, but the aftertaste on many earthy sticks is simply repugnant. I don't know why I have such an aversion to it, but this stick was mercifully devoid of any such problems. The woodiness was more pronounced on the finish than in the smoke.

Uniqueness: 5/10
It seems like a pretty average cigar to me. There was nothing terribly exciting about it, but nothing particularly awful either.

Final Thoughts
Not bad by any means. I don't think I'd buy this stick, though. I'm curious to find out what it was. The last stick I said I didn't care for too much turned out to be something that I really like most of the time. So this will be interesting.

Final Score: 79

I finally got my taster back last week.:blob: Been looking forward to this.

This was a nice corona sized cigar with a colorado wrapper. There were a couple of veins, but they were not very prominent and it didn't take a whole lot away from the cigar. About what you would expect from a $6-8 cigar. Nice triple cap. Spongy and seemed to have a good construction. Nice smooth prelight draw with just the right amount of resistance.

As I lit it the main flavor at the start was a light spice. There were some large undertones of wood and nuts. There was a slight hint of creaminess underneath as well. I'm glad I got my palette back for this one because it was pretty complex.

As I went through the first 1/3 the spiciness stayed as the predominant profile, though the nuttiness and woodiness vied for that lead quite a bit. The longer the ash held, though, the more bitter the spice got. It made me realize how long a finish the cigar had. At the first ash, about 1 1/2 in. or so, the bitterness died down almost completely. This cigar did not want to have a long ash. It was quite brittle, though it would hold for almost 2 inches if you let it.

In the middle the creaminess really came through. It wasn't a PAM creaminess, it really mingled with that light spice. In reality, the middle was where this cigar was best because all four of those flavors were really evident.

The ending really picked up on the earthiness. As with most cigars, the creaminess left at the end. The spice was now an undertone, but still there.

I'm really glad you added this cigar in Luke. It's a cigar I used to smoke alot more, but not one I've had in awhile. I can't say I absolutely know what it is, but it's like an old friend that you haven't seen in years. It took me back and made me remember some things I enjoyed in the past, and still enjoy for that matter.

As a whole it was very complex, though none of the flavors was perfect. With so many cigars today focusing on one or two tones and trying to make those specific ones stand out and develop, it was nice to have one that was more well rounded, though not perfect.

I enjoyed mine outside and was reasonably warm during the smoke. I smoked it while my GF smoked a CAO Eileen's Dream PC. I tried it a few times during our hour long smoke. Not a big fan of the flavors.

Cigar #5 Started out Great nice earthy, nutty flavor with a slight spice. the burn was great during this first third. The flavor maintained this flavor through the second third. Was still good not great or mind blowing but good.

The final third continued with the same flavors but the earthiness stood out more than it had in the beginning. Still smooth and flavorful.

The finish was nice long and creamy. Left a slight spice on the tongue. all in all this was a good cigar that i would smoke often.

Sorry guys, I won't be able to post it this evening, I thought we had till Friday. I meant to smoke mine on Saturday, but alergies made that pointless. I probably won't get home this evening till it is technically tomorrow since it is my companies April 15th party and will be hungover most the day tomorrow.

I smoked mine last night, and will have it up today for sure. Damn for a guy who is 10 minutes early to everything, I sure can procrastinate.

Ok, #5

I liked the color of the wrapper. The sad thing was a seperation of about 2mm in the overlay of the wrapper at the center of the stick. The cut was good with no issues.

The predraw was nice and full. Nice spicy sweet taste.

The stick lit right up. Full plumes of smoke right out of the gate. Though I was expecting a nice start to this one I was denied with a strong, slightly leathery taste. The strength continued through the first half of the stick until I fell victim to the "slit" in the wrapper and it was over.

The ash was a little weak. Held on for about 3/4" at a time before checking out.

The burn was a little squirly. Ran about 1/4" behind on one side. Tried to help it with no real results.

The draw was nice. Easy with plenty of smoke.

As for the flavor. I wasn't that impressed. The predraw was the best part of the stick. The stregth just took over way to fast. I probably would have killed it before the end if it didn't comit suicide itself.

Nothing really unique on this one either. With expection to the color of the wrapper and the predraw.

Finish is irrelevant. Never had a chance.

Just not the one for me. But who am I?

All being said:

Ok, finally got around to smoking this one, lathoough I was at work. Been hard with my dad, work and home, but all is going into place nicely now.

This cigar is a nicely made corona. Nice medium dark wrapper with some good oiliness to it. No construction issues noted, as this cigar had minor veins that ran the length of the cigar. There appeared to be a triple cap, which was well made. This cigar had a springiness to the cigar, which was just the right amount of hardness to spring to it.

After cutting this cigar with my Palio, the pre light draw was nice. Just the right amount of restriction. Hints of spice (white pepper), meidum roasted coffee, straw were present in this one. After toasting it, a nutty spice flavor popped up. A nice almond or macadamia nut taste with a little creaminess. Cedar, coffee and the spice also shined through. A nice draw and burn was developing on this cigar. Also, this cigar had a flakey ash, but it held somewhat tight for the first thrid. Since I was at work, paired this one with water and a glass of Dr. Pepper.

As I continued smoking this cigar, the spice was the dominant flavor, with the hints of nuts, wood and coffee still there. A slight bitter taste (wet grass) developed for a moment, but this discipated quickly and allowed the pepper to develop. THE draw continued to be good, but the ash became even more flakely, which detracted from the enjoyment of smoking this cigar.

The 2nd third was good, but as the ash became flakey, the draw changed, causing me to have to ash this cigar every 1/2" to allow for an unrestricted draw. Good flavor still came through on this cigar though. A minor touch up on the burn also occurred on this third.

THe final third was enjoyable with all the flavors melding together to form a good blend. The ash was still flakey, but no much as to ruin the smoking time. Lot's of smoke emitted from this cigar from start to finish, which added to the experience. The spice was perfect in this blend, complimented by the nuts, cedar, roasted coffee and a slight taste of rosemary. The finish was good and there was no harsh after taste.

Overall, this cigar was good, but not great. I would definitely smoke this one again and again, but might let it age a bit. This might allow the blend to meld even more and cure some of the flakey ash. Sort of reminds me of an Illusione, but not completely, as the spice is not as strong as an Mk. This cigar might go well with a nice glass of Single Malt scotch or good bourbon.

Ok guys here goes.

The wife was a school last night, so I put the kids down, grabbed a beer and put on the movie Rounders, to watch while smoking in the cave.

This stick looked great. The dark brown wrapper had a few viens, but nothing out of the ordinary. The Xikar cut this puppy clean, and the prelight draw was just fine. I got a little pepper and spice in the prelight as well. The cigar lit beatifully with plenty of smoke right off the bat. The first third had a very nice woody nutty flavor. The burn was a little wavy, but I never even thought to correct it. The ash seemed to hold fine, but i ashed it after an inch or so to keep from losing it on my bare belly. Second third became more smooth with a creammy leather taste coming through. Final third became a little more strong with a bitter taste being added as well. It then got a little harsh and I dorrped in the monkey's mouth with about an inch and a half left. The nicotine finish really smacked me when I stood up to clean up the house before the wife got home. The taste left in my mouth was not pleasing, so I brushed. I would say this was an enjoyable smoke, but maybe not a go to smoke. I would certainly smoke this again, but I'm easy to please.
