Habana Leon Serie P No. 2000 (Torpedo)
(Skip this next paragraph to get straight to the review)
Background
These cigars are rolled exclusively for Cigar King by Don Pepin Garcia. The cigar is named after the The Habana Leones, a Cuban baseball team prominent in the 50s. Pepin created this all Nicaraguan cigar with a 70% ligero filler, sun grown binder, and a Corojo wrapper from a 2000 crop yield.
Prelight
Nice reddish brown wrapper with a few veins. Velvety smooth, with a nice point on the fairly short (5 ½) torpedo.
Wood and alfalfa at the foot, with cedar and light tobacco on the cold draw.
First Third
Started a bit dry and grassy with initial notes of parsley and cedar up front and light tobacco in the background. The finish was vegetal and herbal. Very nice uniform burn, with a sharp burn line as you would expect from a 10 year old wrapper. The aroma was light and sort of salty Like burning driftwood. Easy draw with nice smoke volume.
Second Third
Became a bit stronger towards the end of the first third and into the second. Cedar and hints of cocoa in the front with earthier tobacco as a backdrop. The ash was slightly flakey, but held well with nice patterning. Sharp uniform burn continued on, with nice smoke production .Typical quality Pepin construction. The finish remained long, dry, and herbal. A few spicier notes of pepper and nutmeg darted in and out, but were faint.
Last Third
The profile continued to get fuller Cedar, cocoa and spices with an herbal overtone. A simple tobacco background remained. The finish was consistently long, grassy, and vegeta. Burn, draw, and volume all were top notch throughout. With a predominant ligero blend, this cigar was medium strength at best.
Closing
Id like to give this size (and/or another vitola in the line) another tasting, as I have heard many great things about this cigar as being rich and complex. To my palate, this cigar was herbal and vegetal with a long bland finish. Although the craftsmanship was there, the profile was disappointing.
