Haven't been able to smoke a cigar for a little while, yet alone review one, due to the cold weather here in Missouri. Tonight I was jonesing for a smoke so after the wife and kid were asleep I grabbed some cigars and took a stroll down to my local bar (The OK Bar & Grill, hense the title :grin
. These aren't my usual lengthy reviews, but I hope they still prove useful and sorry no pics as I didn't have my camera...
Tatuaje Verocu No. 9
First up was this Tat. I've had a few sitting in my humi and somehow they've gotten burried near the bottom. I dug one out and it was first on the docket for tonight. Pulling it from the cello there is a wonderful earthy chocolate aroma. The cigar looks well constructed and has a nice solid feel to it. The No. 9 comes in at 4.5 x 49 and was special made for Holt's. Nicaragual puro and sports a nice chocolatey wrapper with minimal veins.
Scalped the cap and was met with an easy draw. Not much on the cold draw except a light, clean tobacco flavor. Toasted and lit easitly despite the slight breeze causing the flame on my Bic to dance around a bit.
Right off the bat ther is leather and a little pepper on the finish. The pepper picked up some in the first few puffs. Into the 1/3 and not bad so far. Burn isn't sharp, but nothing that needs touching up. The leather/pepper dominates the cigar and while not bad, I was fearful it may be kind of one dimentional. With the beginning of the 2/3 I was proven wrong when an earthy/unsweet chocolate flavor became present. By the end of the 2/3 the pepper had died down and the leather had taken a back seat to the earthy/chocolate flavors. It was quite good. The ash held nice and strong, falling in ~1" clumps. The final third was a continuation of the 2/3 except that the cigar became more full bodied and a spice note was detectable on the retro hale. Nubbed this sucker as best I could .
Vudu
Bear in mind I smoked this cigar after the Verocu so some of the flavors may have suffered. This is something I normally wouldn't do when smoking a cigar for review, but with the weather I have to get my stogies in when I can . The Vudu is has Nicaraguan filler/binder encased in a dark Mexican maduro wrapper. It's exclusive to Famous Smoke Shop and is manufactured by Rocky Patel. I experienced no staining from the wrapper as is a concern with other cigars from the same manufacturer. This cigar comes in a few sizes, but the one I smoked was the robusto which measured the usual 5 x 50. Overall seems to be a nicely constructed cigar and I only have one gripe...the band. The wrapper is dark and the band is black with black lettering. I feel some sort of accent on the band (perhaps some crimson outline :dunno
would have helped improve the visual.
Scalped the cap and was met with an ever so slightly tight draw. Didn't want to toast very easily, but finally got it going. Right away there was a rich madruo flavor. Not sure how to describe it, but if you've experienced this profile you'll know what I mean. If you haven't...I guess it's like a chocolatey/molassas/jerky combination. Unfortunately that was it, it never really wavered from this profile. I got some nuttiness on the retro hale about 2/3 into the cigar, but very one dimentional to me. The burn wasn't sharp, but again nothing that really needed tending to. I would smoke another one if someone handed it to me (thanks Braden :thumbsup
, but I'm probably not going to be buying any of these any time soon.
Overall a great night...cheap beer, played pool with some buddies, and talked about shit. Although the crowd there does seem to be getting a bit too young and trashy for my tastes these days...may have to start finding a more suitable estalishment to somke in this winter :hanghead:.
