These cigars are made by Don Pepin for Black Cat cigars in PHilly. I did a box split with a few brothers as these are no longer being made for Black Cat and i figured they should be good coming from DPG. Sam form Black Cat claims he was the first retailer to sell a DPG house brand.
I have the robusto size.
This was a pretty decent cigar. The contruction is great as you would expect and the burn and smoke are also qualtiy. The flavors are well balanced but not overly complex. It definitley has a spiciness to it, much more noticeable than some of his other stuff. It has a noticeable undertone of that trademark pepin flavor, but it's a bit more subtle than some of his more recent blends. At times you have to pay attention to taste it. That pepin flavor starts off faint and begins to grow through the first 2 inches of the cigar. After that, it tapers off and never really strengthens. Through out the entire smoke, i kept waiting for it to blossom into that full throttle pepin flavor, but it held itself back the entire time. I kept waiting and waiting but it never happend. That's not to say it isn't a good flavor, but it's a bit more mild than his more recent stuff. I would call this a medium bodied cigar.
My fear going into this smoke is that being as it is one of pepins first blends that he had not fully developed that flavor profile so prevalent in the black labels and the tat reds. This was the case. As i said, i kept waiting for it to grow and strengthen as it burned, but it never did.
I followed this cigar up immediatley with a tat red angeles. The flavor from that tat red is what the rey miguel was wanting to become as i smoked it. You could taste that it wanted to grow into that Tat red flavor, but it never quite turned the corner. It was on the verge and i was begging it to develop, but it didn't.
These will be a great morning or afternoon smoke inabout a year. Even though the box date is oct 2007, it still tasted a bit young. That spiciness needs some time to mellow a bit and blend with the other leather and pepin "charcoal" flavor.
I have faith in this cigar that it will age into a smooth medium-bodied smoke that i will thoroughly enjoy. and who knows, maybe some age will help it develop into that classic pepin flavor that i love so much.
Over all, i give at an 88 with the hopes that it will age to a solid 90.
