BoM August 2010/2011
Last month, I had been in San Antonio for a few days for work. Before driving over to College Station, I stopped off at Cigar Pointe. The shop is owned by our very own Gabe Garcia (CigarPointe). While I was there, I had a chance to hang out and smoke with Gabe for a couple of hours.
Before I left, he handed me one of the new AKA Hybrid cigars. He asked if I would review it for him. I promised I would. I should have posted this review a while back, as I smoked it not long after my trip. However, my job keeps me way too busy on the road. I kept putting this one, and a few others off. Gabe, I am sorry.
The AKA Hybrid (American Kick Ass) uses a special wrapper that is only grown by the Eiroa family....hybrid meaning that it is a cross-bred wrapper. The cigar I have to review is the ABS, which is a 6 x 44 corona size. The wrapper is a nice caramel brown color, has some small veins, and a fairly oily shine. The construction is fairly solid. No soft spots, no flaws in the wrapper, and a well-formed cap.
The pre-light offers only a taste of dry leaves. Light, but not unpleasant. Upon lighting, the first third of the AKA indeed has a leafy taste, with a little spice and pepper mixed within. The burn wavers a little, but manages to stay fairly straight. The ash is a light gray color, and is a little flaky.
Moving to the second third, the leafy flavor transitions to a cedar profile. Spice and bits of pepper still mix within. The burn and ash have been consistent. In fact, the ash held just before I took this picture.
The final third of the ABS had a good mix of leaf and cedar. The spice is now clearly a light cinnamon flavor. The pepper has faded into the background at this point.
This was a good cigar. For me, it wasn't a great cigar, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't smoke it again. It isn't a box buy for me....but everyone has different palates.
I was amazed that this cigar lasted me over 2 hours. Thanks again, Gabe!
