BoM August 2010/2011
This past Friday night, I had the pleasure of smoking one of the upcoming My Father Edicion Limitada 2011 cigars, while at the Federal Cigar 90th celebration dinner. I was really impressed with it, but because of the venue, and all of the great BOTLs and cigar manufacturers present, I didn't take time to write down any notes. Luckily, these cigars were available for sale in bundles the following day at the store's event.
I spoke with Janny and Jaime Garcia a little bit about the cigar. Unlike it's predecessor, it was not rolled by Jaime and Pepin. The cigar is the same size though, 6 1/2 x 52, and features a Habano wrapper (Habano Oscuro, if I recall correctly). It will be available in boxes of 12, like the last release, but the bundles have 15 unbanded cigars.
The MFLE '11 has a nice shine to the wrapper, and has minimal veins, except for one decent sized vein on this particular cigar. A perfect triple cap tops of the head. The smell off of the foot has a strong pepper smell, which did offer a nice burn in my nose.
The pre-light draw offered a clean tobacco flavor, with a bit of pepper. Upon lighting, the first few draws offered up a blast of pepper, which calmed down once the cigar was going. The flavor was comprised of light wood (possibly oak), with honey, pepper, and there seemed to be a bit of brown sugar mixed in as well. The burn was fairly straight, a little off here and there at times, but it could be do to how fresh they are and because of travel. The ash held solid, and was bright white.
The burn evened out quite well as the cigar continued to burn into the second third. The flavors now showed a definite oak base, with bits of cedar, honey, citrus and pepper mixed within.
The final third of the cigar continued to have a main flavor of oak. The secondary flavors now included bits of cinnamon and nutmeg, and cedar on the finish. The flavor was a little muted at times, but again, I think that in this case it is due to the freshness/travel that the cigar has been through. The burn remained straight, and produced the same bright white ash.
The MFLE '11 was perhaps just onto the strong side of medium. It will be interesting to see how this cigar develops over time, especially with the strong blast of pepper to start. I think it is a pretty good cigar right now, and think it will be a great cigar in time. Overall burn time was about 2 hours.
