I am sure most of you have heard about the Viaje White Label Project, which was released earlier in the week. WLP is a very small run of Corona Gordas (5 5/8 x 46). There were only 50 bundles (shown above) released in total, to 5 different stores. The WLP is, from what I have heard from one of the retailers, a blend based off of the Summerfest.
The cigar has a dark, slightly oily Corojo capa. The construction is pretty good overall...a well formed triple cap, good seams on the wrapper (not loose) with little veins, and a covered foot. The one issue was that it seemed a little spongy to the touch. Made me think that this cigar might need some time before smoking.
With a clip of the head with my Palio, the pre-light draw was only of tobacco, but had a moist taste to it. There was a blast of pepper in the first three or four puffs, then the cigar opened up. The first third of the WLP was meaty, with a tangy, almost chewy sensation to it. There were slight hints of leather, along with bits of pepper (less than the initial blast). That blast of pepper that dies down always seems to be an indication that the cigar does need some time. The burn was not always straight, and did require some touch-ups. The ash was a dark gray, and had kind of a wet look to it.
Moving into the second third, the meaty flavor still dominates the profile. The leather taste has increased a little, and was mixed with notes of oak, spice and pepper. The burn remains the same...still wavers a little, needing a touch-up here or there. The dark gray ash has a bit of a wet look to it.
The final third of the WLP keeps that meaty, leathery base flavor, but it is now become muddled. There is a stronger spice and pepper that starts to overcome the meaty flavor. The flavor wasn't unpleasant, but was getting a little harsh towards the end. The burn remained as I have mentioned above.
Overall, I thought that the cigar was good, but not great. The cigar definitely needs down time as I had suspected before lighting it up. It definitely seemed a little wet, so if you are lucky enough to find some...dry box them before smoking. I do feel that this cigar can be great after some down time.
Burn time was about 2 hours. CGs usually take me about 90 minutes to smoke. Now I know different blends will change smoking time, but I do believe that a 30 minute change could be related to the fact that this cigar is "wet". I am in no way an expert on this...just my thoughts.
