  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I received this RP Nicaraguan as a hitch hiker with a deliver from Cigar Auctioneer on Feb. 28. I thought I would smoke it today and let you know what I thought.

Cigar: Rocky Patel Nicaraguan
Size: 6 x 52 Toro
Price Paid: $0.00 :cigar:
Street Price: $4.80 (in a 5 pack)
Drink: Water
Pod Cast: Cigar Dave
Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Habano
Smoke Time: 1 hour 15 mins

Initial Observations:
The aroma is primarily simple tobacco. Construction seems good, there are no soft spots. It is a little veiny, but not toothy. The band is not secured all the way around and is loose at the end. Color is medium brown. Cap looks good. The seams are very visible.

Light: The cigar lights easy. Cut goes well with no unravelling. Initial draw is a very mild (no spice) with a slightly bitter after taste that I find quite welcome. There is lots of smoke to be had.

First Third: The initial bitter after taste goes away and is replaced by a light tobacco flavor. I would classify this as a medium bodied cigar at the most, although it is advertised as full. There is a crisp burn line and the ash holds on for just over one inch. Very easy to smoke.

Second Third: Now the fun begins. The mild tobacco flavor is replaced by a light charred oak with cedar on the retro. There is a cedar after taste that does not linger. The ash is a dark gray. I am catching a new flavor on occasion. Could it be apple? The burn line starts to waver and a small touch up is needed on one side.

Last third: Cedar and apple continue. This is very interesting. Unfortunately, it has become difficult to keep lit. This cigar is going to cut me off. A big "touch up" is required. The cigar stays solid even after the touch ups. No harsh flavors. Again, the cigar needs another touch up and is almost out, so I call it.

Final thoughts: This cigar was a pleasant surprise. I would classify this particular stick as light to medium bodied. I really liked the different flavors I was getting from this cigar. It is unfortunate that it didn't want to stay lit toward the end. About the time I hit the band is where I started having trouble (yes, I took it off). I didn't want to keep doing big touch ups and the wife was wanting me to start the grill, so I was unable to smoke it to the nub. This is a good stick at this price point. I probably wouldn't buy a box, but a fiver would be a good addition to the humidor. This stick was easy to smoke and was a good cigar.

Glad you liked it. It's been a looong time since I've had an RP, but I have fond memories of some of them, especially the decade. I follow the thoughts of many BOTL, when I say he just has too many lines to sort through. Since I've been here, I've discovered so many smaller boutique companies where It seems like if I like one, I seem to like the others because the quality is consistent, and I'm more willing to spend money on those brands.

The Rocky Patel Nicaraguan Reserve is a great stick too. The Vintage 92 was the first cigar I ever smoked. Got me hooked.
But I agree, way too many lines and lack of consistency are killer.
