Brand: RomaCraft CroMagon series
Name: Mode 5
Size: 5 x 50
Shape: Short Perfecto
First impression: a great looking perfecto (if yore not familiar with the perfecto sharp think cartoon shaped cigars. The ones the crows used to smoke
It's dark, very dark and looks like it would leave behind some oil residue on your fingertips. It's making my mouth water just looking at its beautiful construction. Slightly toothy wrapper with only minimal veins running through the leaf.
The body gives off a deep tobacco aroma with a hint of cedar. In all honesty it not what you expect. You want to smell chocolate or coffee but you don't, it's tobacco. Not bad just the first of many tricks this little cigar is going to play on me.
I light then cut (yes, I'm one of those guys). The draw is very tight. I cut a bit more and it got slightly better but don't forget this is a perfecto, it will draw harder initially due to its shape (smaller on both ends than the body).
The first few puff flavors are an initial deep coco, no, mocha flavor with some minimal spice on the retro and a long finish leaving a mild fruity/ earthy flavor behind. Not overpowering in any way and certainly more timid than this dark perfecto leads you to believe.
The first third saw the draw go from hard to medium/hard and flavors grow with that mocha still present but an increase in spice (red pepper) and the intro of a just hint of dark roast coffee at the finish. The ash starts out nice and white but turns a dirty gray and the burn was good. It did some self correcting to the burn line and no troubles to report.
At the half the Mode 5 settles into a nice rythm of mocha, coffee, red pepper and the fullest aroma I have had from a cigar in a long time. It's hard to describe the aroma... Think of sitting in a cafe/bakery/cigar shop with all of those aromas combined into one.
BTW... The ash on this is solid as a rock...till about Hal way then it drops like a rock
The second third ends with a kick up in that red pepper causing the mocha to take a back seat and allowing the coffee an opportunity to show off just a bit.
Well, that didn't last long. The coffee presence took a dive and gave in to the red pepper spiciness. Still smoking well, still drawing med/hard and still delicious!
As I start the final third/nub portion it dawned on me that this would probably be great with a root beer. I was thinking about what scotch I had that would go with this and I think they would all fight for palate space but a root beer would compliment the spice and possible enhance some of the depth this cigar has to offer. Next time for sure!
The final maintains a lot of flavor this cigar has been delivering but starts to add some heat to the end, most likely due to the med/hard draw. The ash gets a bit flakey near the end for some reason. Not wanting to burn out my palate again I ended it once I reached the label (I also moved the label back) and can tell you that if you like a hearty cigar this will do.
I have really been hating the fact that everything is a spice bomb lately but this perfecto seems to find a nice balance where others simply can not. If you can get your hands on these do it, buy two or a fiver or a box. Just get some!
