Since I already smoked the other two wrappers, Habano and Maduro, I thought it would only be fair to smoke the Connecticut. As with the others, I utilized a robusto, 5 X 52 to review this cigar. I feel that robustos and petit coronas allow folks to taste the blends the best. Just my opinion though. This cigar had an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, the binder was Honduran and Dominican and the filler was Nicaraugan and Honduran. With the typical San Lotano double bands, this cigar appears to be well made. SOme rate this cigar as a full strength cigar, but I have to disagree. Typically, Connecticut wrappers are light and mild.
This cigar has a nice light golden tan wrapper, which has some veins. I noticed a slight oily sheen to the wrapper and there was a slight soft spot towards the crown of the cigar. As noted in the Maduro and Habano, I loved the double band on this cigar as the brand band was well designed and went well with the appearance of this cigar. The Connecticut band was a nice touch to this good looking cigar. There were no issues with the construction of this cigar.
Pre-cut hints of wood, nuts and a light coffeecame through on this cigar. Just based on the pre-light smeel, I knew this cigar was going to be too weak for me, but one must give every cigar a chance. I cut the cap with my Palio, which is my always my preferred cutter. Pre-light tastes of a cedar, vanilla, a slight citurs taste and a mild coffee came through. After toasting with my Dupont Xtend lighter, this cigar took off. Lots of smoke emitted and a nice even burn line started to develop. After a few draws, hints of cedar, citrus, a toffee nut and light coffee were present. As I expected, this cigar was going to be too mild for my palate.
Throught the first and second thirds of this cigar, the flavors remained. There were no construction or draw issues. As this cigar hit the final third, I immediately noticed a harsh sour metallic taste develop, along with the cedar, toffee nut, light coffee. Gone was the citrus taste. THe burn and draw remained intact, but that harsh, sour flavor tainted this cigar. This cigar lacked the complexity of the other two blends. A slight hint of nicotine started also, but that was not the sourness I was picking up. I had to toss this one with about an inch and a half left.
Overall, I did not enjoy this cigar, as it was too mild for me. To me, it was like smoking plain air and lacked a good flavor. You should not though that just because I don't enjoy a cigar, does not mean you won't. The wonderful thing about having so many different cigars is that there is always a cigar for someone to enjoy. I purchased this ciagr for $6.50, but retailers sell this one in the $6 to $8 range.
I realize rating cigars by number is silly for some folks, but others like to see rating number on a cigar. I rated this one at a 7.5 on the 10 point scale. This one took a dive in the ratings due to the lack of flavor and body to me. All of the cigars in this line are well made, so you amy or may not want to need to add this into your future cigar samplings. AJ really is making some wonderful cigars.
