So I checked my bank account online to make sure I was charged the correct price, with no extra shippin/carrier costs and lo and behold...

a 3% foreign currency conversion fee. I know it's pretty standard procedure for most banks and CC's, but I'd never bought in foreign currency before. Oh well, it was about 30 or so cents per stick. If anyone wants to tack a little on their payment for this, fine. I don't expect it, since when I gave the price, that was the price. if I absorp some of the extra $, it's still a sweet ass price on thie deal. Additionally, we're not talking about a serious amount of $$$. just about 16 bucks for the entire order of $550. drop in proverbial bucket.

mainly, everyone should check with their account specs. before buying stuff in euros.

Yeah, I just read about this just before I made my purchase as well. Sometimes, we get spoiled purchasing from vendors who charge in USD.

I mean, damn... come on! Everyone should charge in USD... just like everyone should speak American... I mean English. =P

this is just one of the many details that contribute to my general disdain of banks. I got rid of wells fargo for that exact same reason. and they started blocking my domestic transactions as well.

they circulated a letter stating they would begin charging a fee on currency exchange AND international transactions -- I think I told you about that, didn't I scott? went to another bank, chase. and I flat out asked the lady that opened my account "do you charge an international transaction fee?" she said no. well, guess what? the bitch lied to me.

I have changed banks several times since I have graduated. currently hold accounts in 5 banks and one thing I have determined is that they ALL suck. some more than others. they all implement different practices to screw you. from floating checks, waiting until the next business day to post a fuckin' cash deposit made at the counter, and holding wire transfers for a fuckin' week. I especially love the "mma excess activity fee", I got docked $36 for writting more than one check from a money market account. whatever.

if I lived in austin I'd open up another account at the ufcu. that was by far the most accomodating bank I have ever dealt with.

I have belonged to the same Credit Union for more than 25 years and they do not charge for all the weird bullshit that regular banks do.

credit uniosn rule. it is unfortunate that I'm not eligible to apply for one in houston. the only one I'm eligible for is the university federal credit union as a texas ex, but it is really difficult to manage that account from afar.

Actually, Jorge, CU rules changed a while back. Almost anyone can join one, it's just left up to the individual CU as to who they let join (ie professions, organizations, etc.) Check it out.

check this gem out:

Bank Accounts

Total balance: $0.00

Account Available balance Current balance
Chase Free Checking Not Available Not Available

Activity Statements Pay bills

it has been "under maintenance" all weekend, and now it won't let me see a balance online and on the phone. there is money in there, because I just paid fedex this for some "duties" I racked up.

I love how banks can jerk us around like that. I can understand it being down for a few hours...but 3 days and counting?

I'll hold your money for you. J/J I have Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and they are great. I have never had any problems with them. Although I have not had any international buys.

the saga continues.

I walked into the branch because I got several letters for them that had been marinating in my mailbox for a week. they told that I have way too much activity in my savings account. blah blah blah. I basically do too many online transactions on it, which is limited to 6 per month. however, if I do them at the branch or the atm I can do as many as I want...sorta defeats the purpose of having the convenience of online banking.

oh and they also explained the reason for the maintenance problems is that they are finally merging the bank one accounts, so I might encounter operational problems until october. great.
