  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Sorry gang, no pictures with this review. I couldn't take the big macro lens and body to the B&M.

What started with a so-so dinner ended up with me sitting on the bathroom floor getting "that feeling" that hate - you know, the bile taste, the spinning sensations, the "I drank wayyyy too much too fast" feeling.

Here's how it starts.

Went to the local last night with my brother-in-law (occasional smoker) after a sushi dinner with the family. Poked around the really good selection, passed over my mainstay Gurkha cabinet (the owner knows that's my favorite) and went near the Camachos. I have a Camacho Liberty and Camacho Triple Maduro already in the humidor at home.

I picked up a Camacho Diploma Corojo 6/60 which was priced at ~$12, grabbed my brother-in-law's Drew Estate Java 6/62 (I think) and paid up, sucka.

The appearance of the Diploma was terrific. Solid build, hefty, with what I felt was perfect construction. Smooth, thickly packed, and promising.

Snipped off the cap, lit up, and sat down for what I felt was at least an hour and fifteen minute smoke. 6/60 is a damn big cigar.

About a third through, the ash falls in my lap and all over the floor, earning me the look of disgust from the manager. The ash didn't even hold as it landed - it shattered into a thousand salt-sized particles.

Meh, I thought. I was more careful as the night continued. I noted that while the burn remained steady and the draw was cool, the ash flaked off very rapidly upon combustion. Think snowflakes. Rather annoying.

The aroma was pretty standard throughout. Leather, creamy smoke with some spiciness. Heavy flavor. Maybe a bit too much.

At about halfway, I noticed that the B&M's ventilation wasn't working, and there was a lot of smoke lingering. I started getting nauseous and walked out to get air, and felt slightly better.

Went back in, picked up the half-finished Diploma. Few more minutes puffing occasionally, and the room spun. I had to put it down before it put me down.

I crept into the bathroom, prayed i didn't :barf: and eventually crawled into the bedroom.

I don't think it was the stick's fault - or maybe it was. There was so many factors here - the dinner, the strength/flavor profile of the stick, the lack of circulation in the B&M.

I think there's a combo of all the reasons, although this is the second time I've run out of the B&M near sick. The other time was after a CAO Mx2. I noted this feeling never happens in the open air.

I guess it's all part of being a newb.

Yea that sucks brother!! That Camacho is a nice smoke (but too pricey). I usually don't care for corojo wrappers but Camacho's taste great to me. I think you need more time to refine your palet. The Java is great with coffee FYI.....:peace:

Thanks for the review!

Sorry to hear it got to you like that though, give it time, work your way up to the heartier smokes. I for one really enjoy corojo wrappers, the more the merrier and have always enjoy the Camacho Diploma, especially the Corojo Maduro..

Maybe a smaller one would help you out a bit?
Thanks all for the responses.

I really am pointing to the lack of circulation in the B&M and the overall gauge/length of the cigar. I've had medium-full high ring-gauge (54+) cigars in the open air (including several glasses of whiskey!) with no issues, but the combo of a 6/60 & lingering smoke was probably the knockout punch.

Let me put it out there that the Diploma's taste was *not* bad at all. I had issues with the flaky ash but overall, the cigar was enjoyable. Up until I stood up.

A bigger ring gauge does not necessarily mean it has more ligero or strength to it. However I do find that you have to puff on them more to keep them from going out, so that may have to do with your stomach problems - along with the circulation (which is probably the major factor).

Camacho's used to be very good. Now they can be ok. I would suggest trying them again in a better ventilated area and maybe try a thinner cigar. Also, try the Room 101 - by Camacho if you get a chance.

Great review brother, sounds like it just wasn't your night though...

I HATE a flaky ash! -- I as well get nauseous when I don't have enough air or a place to spit. Being a new smoker and all, swallowing the saliva really upsets my stomach. I feel gross spitting, but it's the only way I can really end up enjoying a cigar.

Thanks again for the review!

Great cigar. Strong as hell. This was the original bad boy of strong cigars before tatuaje and Joya. Diploma is my fav of the line. Sorry to was too strong for you. Sugar, a big meal will help.

Pretty standard Camacho experience with the flaky ash. I also find that most of the time the draw is overly loose and that the cigar feels spongy to the touch. That said I do enjoy the flavors.

Great review! Good story too. I usually smoke outside but I can see how being in a smoked out room, smokin a big ol cigar, and drinking after eating sushi can stop the party! Quick!

Sorry to hear it didn't go so well. Sounds like what happened to a kid that tried a Camacho Triple Maduro 60/6 at a B&M near me. The guy that sold it to him asked if he ever smoked one before. Kid said no, so the guy told him he'd only sell it to him if he stayed there to smoke it. I guess about halfway through, a friend of the kid had to help him to the bathroom. Guess he didn't really eat much at all that day.

I'll echo Chuck & say that sugar does help - I like the Eddy's Ice pops after a strong cigar, it doesn't have a ton of sugar, yet it will calm the palate & the stomach.

The thing is, if the Diploma made you feel weezy, then I'd recommend stearing clear of the Triple Maduro unless you are fully prepared. The Triple was the last one that got me green - even the other cigar smokers around me were commenting that it was REALLY STRONG.

The Comacho I've been enjoying the most lately is the Room 101... I like it more & more evertime I smoke one... The PE is another really good one.
