  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Size: Petite Corona ( 4 1/4" x 40 )
Wrapper: Natural = Aged / fermented Conn Shade?
Maduro = Nicaraguan private stock that is aged 6 years + triple fermented
Binder / Filler: A blend of five different leaves.
These cigars are rolled in Honduras.

After listening to a DWSC episode from Jan 2006 when Bob and Dale reviewed the maduro version of this cigar, I was really intrigued by their comments and decided to buy a sampler. This is a quintessential boutique brand - very limited distribution - so I bought via the main corporate website in FL. I received a few different sizes of both natural and maduro, including this PC size which come packaged in tins of 8.

The natural wrapper is a medium/light brown color with some small veins. The maduro wrapper is a very dark chocolate color also with some small but noticeable veins. The roll seems very good - no soft or hard spots. My only complaint here is that the band is tough to remove.

I must say I totally agree with the DogWatch crew ... these are a surprisingly good smoke. The overall strength is on the mild-medium side, but the flavors are where it's at with this cigar. From the moment I lit them up I was greeted with tons of smooth, complex flavors. Honey, cedary, creamy and occasional coffee / nutty notes. The maduro version is slightly stronger and has some added spiciness, but otherwise the core flavors are basically the same. The draw was easy and the burn very even throughout. Also, they did not get harsh or hot during the second half.

These are priced at $22 for a tin of 8 ... which I find to be a great value for this caliber of smoke. I'd put them in the same league as a Hemingway Short Story.

Guys, please note that I'm not comparing them to a Short Story.

But as far as quality, amount of complex flavors, smoking time and price is concerned ... if I had these and Short Storys in the humi, it would be a tossup as to which to choose.
