  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Small question

I live in Las Vegas, and one of my best friends just started smoking cigars. He likes Habanos, and has quite a bit of expendable income to spend on them. He has a large upright freezer that the compressor just went out. He wants to convert it into a humidor. Any sugestions.

Thanks, I will pass on the site. We could not find anyting large enough for 80 to 100 boxes, but did not take up half the garage.
Go to Wal-Mart and buy him 4 of the biggest coolers you can find. Order about 8 LBS of Heartfelt beads and get to ordering some smokes. Stack the coolers and you won't take up too much room. And Cigarsolutions is a great supplier of awesome humidors.

If he did not go that route, is there a solution for keeping it around 70 degrees. The humidifacation is an easy fix, but the temp will not be. Seeing as it will be in a garage here in Las Vegas.

Not really, I know Jeff stands his coolers upright, and adds an ice pack everyday or so. I would think considering the investment in cigars we are talking about. 100 boxes at $200 a box average would be 20k in smokes. Seams the only way to make this work would be to contact Cigar solutions and get a BIG ASS cooled humidor. Even then the garage is going to be F"ING DAMN HOT. A cooled humi might not even be able to keep the smokes cool enough to prevent heat damage or beetle infestation. I would contact the expert humi builders and get the info directly from them.

agreed! dont even mess with coolers when your keeping 20k in cigars. no need to risk it

Get to know your local B&M really well and rent a large locker. In Las Vegas this is the best system unless you get a temp controller humi and even that will not work in a garage in Las Vegas where it gets up into the 120 degrees. The garage will far exceed that temp and no humi that I know of will be able to offset that kind of heat. Like trying to keep something cool inside and operating oven.

I think Chuck is right. Especially if he's just getting into cigars. He does NOT want to buy 100 boxes right now anyway. Start small, buy boxes when he's sure he loves a particular stick.

But can I ask, why is the garage the only option for storing them? He can't keep a cooler inside the house somewhere (closet?) out of the way? The temperature issue would not be as bad inside the house.

Otherwise, go for the locker. If/when he decides he's going to be a true cigar fiend, then building an expensive cooler/humi system might be more justified.

--Speaking of lockers, does anyone know of a B&M in the Minneapolis area that has big storage lockers? I may need to leave some of my collection behind when we get deployed. :hanghead:

Anyone in the Las Vegas area know which shop has large lockers? The place we go are of the average variety. Please keep in mind we live in the West side of Las Vegas, by 215 and Charleston.

He can't keep a large humidor inside, his wife put her foot down (she doesn't really like the idea that I got him started, but we have been friends for 15 years, so whatever). I took awhile to convience my wife, but she is pretty understanding. I am building a smoking room with built in humidor.

Not trying to be rude but my question is this or rather my statement. If I were thinking of investing 20K in a past-time such as cigars, I wouldn't go cheap with a broken freezer as a storage system and I damn sure wouldn't keep them in a garage in Vegas. Maybe a better solution would be converting a spare closet or a custom build humi that would fit into the wife's decor. It's interesting what a woman will do for a beautiful piece of furniture. :starrylov

I gotta say, if he's got the cash to spend 20-30 K on cigars, he's got the cash to buy a really nice cooled humidor that will hold 2000 cigars. Those can be readily had for around $2K. of course, you could spend as much as you want, but not a whole lot less for that size. And its not going to take up half the garage. This would be maybe 3 x 6 x 6. A piece of furniture certainly meant for more than a garage.

I also gotta say this whole idea just doesnt add up, or else your buddy is stinky filthy rich and cares nothing about blowing 20k, cuz that's what he'd be doing by buying that many illegal habanos and then putting them in the garage. And all that assumes he could get away with buying them in the first place, and also assumes he'd be getting real CCs.

Something smells fishy
