  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

so how would you handle this?

some genius in my company has decided to schedule an "exceptional customer service" workshop for saturday oct. 27 from 9am-4pm. that conflicts with the home game against nebraska. the email that was circulated indicated mandatory attendance.

I immediately told our HR person that I had a scheduling conflict with a horns' home game. she told me that it was mandatory and that saturdays were the only days were we could take this course. we are expanding and in doing so we are transitioning from a small, intimate company into a mini-corporate robot.

I've always maintained that any company related stuff needs to be done during the week on company time. but some of the new people we have brought in don't share that same sentiment (i.e. our anniversary party should be monday oct. 1st...but they want to have it saturday oct. 6th...bullfuckin'shit).

is it unreasonable of me to have a hard time with this? I've always said I don't have a problem working weekends as long as they aren't during the college football season...hell this past holiday season (thanksgiving to past new year I had a total of 2 days off).

I'm hoping to come to a compromise but seeing as to the duration of the class it's looking like I'll miss the game entirely, even the broadcast:

- have the company reimburse me for my ticket, plus give me two free days off for "pain and suffering"

- say "fuck it" and go to the game

- threaten to resign

any other ideas?

If a company is going to schedule something on a Saturday, they have to understand that people will have conflicts. What if that Saturday was your kid's birthday and you had a shindig planned for 1:00? Or you were in a wedding?

See, there's where you screwed up. You have to be thinking ahead with a lie. Being in a wedding out of town is the ultimate trump to any mandatory work issue. And if they want proof? Find someone who has a wedding to attend that day and borrow their invitation.

But back to your situation. Go. What are they going to do, Fire you? You have prior plans. You have money invested in those plans. Tell them you're going and be one with your decision, Jorge-san.

in austin now.

I wanted to post that on quack's, but didn't have time to duplicate it. I bolted from the office as soon as I banged out that post.

they are not going to and they can't fire me, but I hate being put in a possition like this. I bolted for the rose bowl without telling anyone. I kept getting ragged about it for two months.

deep down I'm pissed that there's a double-standard. out of the principals I'm the youngest by far, and of course, the only single one. everyone gets a pass when we have to modify our plans to accomodate their family schedule but when it comes to me traveling to games on the weekend or going to another wedding I never hear the end of it.

I'm with Legends on this one....FUCK EM....go to the game. I also agree with Legends that you should've thought out your reasoning for not being able to attend this "mandatory" workshop. What...do they think the world revolves around them? They should respect the fact that you're proactive and schedule things ahead of time rather than flying by the seat of your pants. With that said...we'll be at LW's Sunday around 1:30 herfing and watching football.....so get your ass over there....NO EXCUSES allowed or i'll be forced to email your boss and expose you.

Greg, once Jorge settles down and gets married, he'll start thinking like this. I'm convinced that too many guys don't get good at it until the get a ring on their finger.
