Hey well welcome to the club @navyvet
Yes way cheaper will get you in the door but variety and complexity is what got me hooked.
Well, there have been somethi gs i have found i dont like. Draw always seems to he loose no matter how hard a pack it all the relights and it just doesnt seem to be as flavorful as cigars

Have you tried the 3 step pack method? Works great for me. Especially for the more dry tobacco. I had a similar experience with flavor compared to cigars until I started smoking the really full bodied tobaccos. I would be happy to share some thoughts and some samples with you.

I was on a tear over the past year or so buying and trying anything that I thought I would like only to discover many I liked just didn't agree with me, so instead of sitting on this tobacco, I'm offering it up here to people that know will enjoy it.

Sealed tins:
1 Balkan Sasieni 50g 04/17 $9
1 Cornell & Diehl Sunset Harbor Flake 2oz 04/07 $15 SOLD
1 GL Pease Stonehenge Flake 2oz 06/17 $12
1 HU Dockworker 50g 11/17 $15 SOLD
3 MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired 3.5oz 11/12 $20 each
1 MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian 3.5oz 01/08 $20

2 Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky 50g 06/17 $10 each
4 Samuel Gawith Brown Sugar Flake 50g 06/17 $15 each SOLD

Open tobacco:
Orlik Dark (Strong) Kentucky Flakes ~2002, purchased a 100g tin from Pipestud for $60 a month or so back, 70g left in a jar for $40
Note: I really like this stuff, but it bites me like crazy, so I thought that a really well aged sample would tame the bite, but not so much.

HU Nashville County 85g 11/17 $24 SOLD
MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian 4.3oz 02/12 $25
