  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Springfield Precise Temp Hygrometer
Price: $6.47
Place: Local Wal-Mart

I picked it up at my local Wal-Mart near the paints, glues, etc. section.

It requires a 1 AAA battery (not included) to operate. It has a magnetic strip on the back of the pager-like clip to attach it to metal surfaces. It also has a pin designed to turn the clip into a stand. It has a button to change the Temp reading from F to C. It also has a Max/Min button. Do you basic salt test and you should be good to go.

After the salt test:

The humidity was on target at 75%.

Verdict:

For $6.47 you really can't lose.

+ It's cheap, takes AAA battery, and you can find it locally. I bought a few more and most of 'em have been dead on.

I use two of these Springfield hygros; One in my humidor and one in a small Igloo cooler. They were both dead-on after the salt test. I don't have a need for any more at this time, but I keep an eye on 'em anytime I'm in a W-Mart.

Good pics / Good review.

I've got 3 of these, and 2 of them are spot on. The 3rd reads 20% below actual humidity, but not bad for 3 hygrometers less than $20. I bought one from CI for $20 that didn't work to begin with!

No idea Ron. I say grab a couple, salt test 'em, and return the inaccurate ones. Gotta love Wal-Mart.
Been doing this for the last couple of years. I have 4 of these and returned 2 that were not accurate. There isn't anything that will let you adjust it so it either works or it doesn't. Salt test is almost a requirement to ensure an accurate measurement.

When testing lets you know where your hygrometer stands, why would you you return one just because it reads a % or two off? If something is truly defective I can understand, but this is a simple math adjustment. Just an ethical thing for me I guess.

By all means, when it's off by a few % it's not a problem, but when it's off by a large margin (10-20+%) like krulos experienced, it can be cause for concern.

I've got the kind you can recalibrate from RonC have no issues. But that is a great deal and they look like they work well.

Thanks for the heads up

Not the impression the OP gave at all. If a unit is 20% off, its defective, then a replacement is warranted. A few % off is no means to take a product, shelve it and have a store lost it's costs just so you can keep trying to get one that's spot on from the get go. No wonder why things cost so much. Get one from Ron that's calibratable from the begin with.

For the sake of arguement, even if it's dead-on and you're still not satisfied, you can return it and it would be within your right to do so. They offer a customer satisfaction guarantee.

Is that not WAAAAY to much water? From what I understand the salt is supposed to be just wet enough to not fall apart but not a slurry like mix like you have. With the extra amount of water your hygro technically should read a lot higher..... JMHO

I've done several hygrometers using both methods you described and found no real difference.

Just makes sense to me that with the amount of water you have in there it should read closer to 100% until most of it evaporates off (obviously impossible in a bag)

I've only had to do this once and was told to use a cup of salt to a half cup of water...
