WHNT News 19 has received word that football player, Steve McNair, has been shot and killed in downtown Nashville. He suffered a fatal gunshot to the head. A woman was also found dead with him. The incident happened at 2nd South & Lea Ave.
"When police officers arrived in response to that call, they found two individuals who had been shot to death inside the residence. One female, one male. We now know that the male deceased is Steve McNair. The female deceased has been tentatively identified. We're working to confirm that and then notify her next of kin," said Nashville police spokesperson Don Aaron.
McNair was the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans when they went to the Superbowl in 1999. Nicknamed, "Air McNair," he played 13 seasons of professional football before retiring in 2008.
Titan's owner, Bud Adams, has released a statement about the McNair's tragic death and called him "one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."
