  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Started smoking a pipe in the evenings.

My first day I grabbed some cheap aromatic from the liquor store. Sir Walter Raleigh.
While I like it, not much flavor going on.
Went by my B&M and grabbed some night cap, as I had seen it mentioned here a few times.
Love it. Hate it when I finish my bowl.
Just wondering what else was out there I might like?
Really love the balanced bold flavors I get from the night cap.

Was thinking the McClelland no. 5110?
Frog Morton?
Open to all suggestions.

Frog mortons are great English blends. Jump on the newbie thread and that'll get you started with various different kinds. I like aromatics but like you I couldn't even taste them at first. Took some time.

No other path than to try it all. It is a little more helpful for folks to make suggestions if you tell them where your coming from (i.e. cigars, cigarettes etc) and what kind of things you like.

I came from cigars and am hooked on sweet virginias out of the bulk jars at my local shop (so not sure what each is). I had a night cap version (not sure how close to dunhills version it is) and didn't care for it.

This pipe thing is a great relaxing pasttime which is another fun hunt for your favorite (like cigars, scotch, bourbon for me). Enjoy.

Try some English blends. They tend to be stronger. Try some dark English ( can't remember company), H&H house of Lords, and there are MANY others.

I also recommend you try out the newbie trade, really helps you out on your pipe journey.

If I may make a suggestion.... Smoke the nightcap slower. It'll taste like the beginning of the bowl all the way through. If smoking too fast (most newbies do, hell I still do and it's been a year now) the tobacco and bowl heats up too much and causes shit flavors.

I've finally learned to slow down for the most part and get great flavors all the way to the bottom.

I'm still a pipe noobie coming from the cigar world. I'd recommend some Lane 1Q, Escudo Navy Deluxe, and Squadron Leader. Those have been my favorites so far.

Coming from cigars. I prefer full bodied.

And I definitely agree about the relaxation.
I find myself more relaxed sitting on my couch with a pipe than I ever have with a cigar. Almost opiate like relaxed.
Errrrr....try the pipe with opiates, and you'll feel like you're out of debt.... ;)

Since you're in Southern Illinois, you should also think about coming up and join us at the Chicago pipe show this Spring!
