I asked this in the Wet Shaving Society on FB and thought I would ask the brothers here:

I was looking at suribachi bowls today, thinking they would make an awesome shaving bowl considering their rough interior.

I figured that, since the interiors are unglazed, that it would likely absorb some of the soap oils but since I wasn't planning on using it in the kitchen too, then I didn't care.

I read a bunch of reviews and about half say it's a great idea while half says stay away from them because the unglazed interior is so rough that it beats up the hairs on your brush.

Have any of you used (or use) suribachi bowls for lathering up your creams and soaps?

i am inclined to say that you'd bust up some brushes that way...
That's what I am thinking although a boar's hair brush might stand up. I'd never sacrifice a decent badger hair brush. Someone suggested getting a cheap brush to try it out but if I did that and the brush got beaten to hell, I really wouldn't know if it was because of the bowl or because it was just a cheap brush.
