Last night I tried a Tabak Especial Negro by Drew Estate. I got this cigar in a PIF and have been wanting real bad to try it. I don't like infused or flavored cigars, but for some reason this one appealed to me. Well, for the most part I was diappointed.
The prelight smell was that of chocolatey/coffee tobacco. I cut the cap and immediately wrinkled my nose when I stuck the cigar in my mouth. The cap was so sickeningly sweet my stomach wanted to :barf:. I have read good things about this cigar though so I made a mental resolve to at least light it and see how things went. The prelight draw was a bit loose, but I couldn't decide if it was truely loose or if it just seemed looser than the Hemingway I smoked before it. The shaggy unfinished foot was cool (more cigars should come that way :thumbsup
, but took a little persuasion to light evenly. Once lit the cigar produced copious amounts of thick pleasant smoke , but that sickenly sweet taste was still there. It overpowered the cigar. After about the first third the sweeness wore off and I started to get more of the tobacco flavor mixed with a chocolatey/coffee flavor. The last third was the most enjoyable part of the cigar. By then the sweetness from earlier was completely gone and I was left with a very slight peppery/coffee tobacco taste. No burn isses to speak of.
I probably wouldn't smoke this cigar again. I certainly wouldn't buy one (at $6-7 a cigar there are way too many others that are a great smoke). The cigar finally became an ok cigar, but I had to smoke through 2/3 of a cigar I didn't care for to get there. Not worth it. Perhaps if the start of the cigar wasn't so damn sugary...is it really necessary to make it that way :dunno:. It seems to me that it could be a pleasant smoke (though not something I'd smoke on a regular basis) if not for the sweetness. I have some more cigars by Drew Estate, I hope they are better...
