  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Last night I tried a Tabak Especial Negro by Drew Estate. I got this cigar in a PIF and have been wanting real bad to try it. I don't like infused or flavored cigars, but for some reason this one appealed to me. Well, for the most part I was diappointed.

The prelight smell was that of chocolatey/coffee tobacco. I cut the cap and immediately wrinkled my nose when I stuck the cigar in my mouth. The cap was so sickeningly sweet my stomach wanted to :barf:. I have read good things about this cigar though so I made a mental resolve to at least light it and see how things went. The prelight draw was a bit loose, but I couldn't decide if it was truely loose or if it just seemed looser than the Hemingway I smoked before it. The shaggy unfinished foot was cool (more cigars should come that way ), but took a little persuasion to light evenly. Once lit the cigar produced copious amounts of thick pleasant smoke , but that sickenly sweet taste was still there. It overpowered the cigar. After about the first third the sweeness wore off and I started to get more of the tobacco flavor mixed with a chocolatey/coffee flavor. The last third was the most enjoyable part of the cigar. By then the sweetness from earlier was completely gone and I was left with a very slight peppery/coffee tobacco taste. No burn isses to speak of.

I probably wouldn't smoke this cigar again. I certainly wouldn't buy one (at $6-7 a cigar there are way too many others that are a great smoke). The cigar finally became an ok cigar, but I had to smoke through 2/3 of a cigar I didn't care for to get there. Not worth it. Perhaps if the start of the cigar wasn't so damn sugary...is it really necessary to make it that way :dunno:. It seems to me that it could be a pleasant smoke (though not something I'd smoke on a regular basis) if not for the sweetness. I have some more cigars by Drew Estate, I hope they are better...

Nice review. If you don't like sweetened tips, wash them off gently with your fingers and water and that will take care of it.

Thanks for the review and your honesty!!
This is a cigar you either love or hate as is with most DE stuff. However My brothers are occasional cigar smokers and love these and so do our wifes. I'm with you on 90% of infussed cigars but there are a few I don't mind from time to time. Java, Irish Hopps, and Taback are sticks which I always keep a few on hand.

Thanks for sharing Dan, and great tip Nate! I'll try that the next time
I encounter a sweet tip.... Now if I want to wash the infused taste out
of an acid, what do I do? Wash it in a little "Soap and Water"? :hysterica:hysterica:hysterica

Nice review ! I actually I enjoy the Tabak more than the Java. I don’t think the Tabak has that overwhelming upfront sweetness like I get on the Java.Tabak gives off a nice sweet chocolate smell. I had one of the smaller vitolas of these last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks for the honest review. I find that alot of the infused DE cigars are excellent doorway cigars for newbies. I started out with Kuba Kubas but don't know if I could smoke a whole one now.

Nice review, Daniel! That Isla del Sol I got from Aaron (Halloween Harry) had that sugar tip on it, too! It was nearly enough to ruin the whole thing. I finally licked my finger and got it wiped mostly off.

Yeah the first cigar that I smoked other than cheap'o convenience store cigars was an Isla del Sol from Drew Estates. Although the sweetened tip was a little strange at first I found it to be mildly sweet and went away pretty quickly into the cigar.

I have gone away from the sweetened tips on my cigars but I do agree that the Isla del Sol is a good starter for beginner smokers due to the mild flavor and aromas..... if you dont mind the sweetened tip.
