  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I light up my first Tat Black (first Tat for that matter) on a walk with the dogs and family last night. At first I was not impressed in fact I considered putting it out. Good thing I didn't, I told my wife I'll see it all the way through and make judgment then. Well good thing I did.. By the time I was done with that smoke I was in love and burning the tips of my fingers. In fact I was bummed it was over. All in all I was happy from 5 puffs in all the way until the burnt finger tips. These are now ranked in my top 3 NC. Way to go Pete.. As I'm sure you are already aware you have a winner!

Wow... that quite the improvement for going from "about to put it out" to "one of my top three NC smokes"! Guess that says a lot about how dynamic this cigar is.

I smoked my first one last weekend. Although it was the robusto version, I was really surprised at how smooth it was. Most tats for that matter are considered full bodied, but that wasn't my experience with the black label. It was much more subtle and full of flavor. I was definately impressed, although I ususally am with most Pepin smokes...

I agree it is a tad slow to start but once you get it going it is really good. I think a little more age may help bring this cigar full circle and make it so enjoyable.

Black Label is a good smoke for sure, and that experience of fighting through the first half inch on a cigar is not that rare IMO. I've had quite a few smokes that needed to get going before they got going. Many are too bitter and harsh for my taste at first light.

I'm not sure what exactly you guys are referring to as "getting started" or the "first part", but my experience with most, adn probably every cigar is that it takes about 5 puffs before you get rid of the "just lit" taste. There's most always some sort of taste left from whatever you light it with. Until recently, i jsut revised my lighting procedure with my torch so that i don't get the 1/2 inch of black char at the foot when i lite it, but even still it takes about 5 puffs for the cigars true flavors to hit. I have no idea how CA comes off putting so much stock into the first 3 puffs of a cigar.

About the only exception to my findings that the first several puffs of all cigars suck are the opus and other like-blended AF cigars...and even a few of the Ops no. 5s have started off poorly.

So, i say all that to say that i don't even consider the first 5 puffs of a cigar when i'm evaluating it's flavor.

But that's just my findings. Maybe i really suck at lighting a cigar.

Regarding the tat blacks tho, i will say that while i smoked the only one i've had so far, i kept saying WOW the whole time, and every time i said WOW, it was said with more conviction and with more ferver. I really need to smoke another one, it was sssoooooo good.

My wife kept saying geez honey, that must be really good.

I tried the Tat black this past weekend, was not particularly impressed. It did taste like a tat stick, but it was more like tatuaje meet rocky patel or torano. To me, it tasted milder than tatuaje I normally smoke (J21), but tasted sweeter. It definitely had more on the tongue flavor and sweetness, but at the cost of usual twangy nasal after taste that I love about tatuaje. Strength wise, so-so, I get more kick from a J21. This was aging for about 2 months in my humi at 65% humidity. I have a couple more which I will experiment with the humidity to try to extract more flavor out of these... Tats usually smoke better on the dry-side anyway.
