Today was such a pleasant day outside that after the little one went down for his nap I took a book out to the deck and started reading. It just didn't feel right so I headed back in, cracked open the humidor and rummaged for something to smoke. It had been a good day and I was in the mood for something a little more "top shelf" than my usual smoke. I settled on a Tatuaje 7th Reserva. This cigar has been talked about quite a bit lately and while I was in Tulsa last weekend I picked one up (or rather my wife did for me
). This cigar measures 5 5/8" x 46, both the filler and binder are Nicaraguan and the wrapper is the much talked about Connecticut Broadleaf . The particular cigar I smoked had a little bit of a rough look to it with a few veins and the seams were noticeable, but tight. The wrapper is a nice chocolaty color. It is packed well, but with a spongy feel.
The aroma coming off this cigar is of spices and chocolate at the head, transitioning to a more floral aroma at the foot. The cap clipped cleanly and the cold draw contains flavors of faint cocoa with a hint of spice. The cigar toasted nicely and we're off...
The first few puffs are remarkably absent of flavor, but things soon changed. There was an amazing amount of smoke from the get go and would continue the whole way through. By about a half inch in the flavors really picked up, like a punch in the face, consisting of an chocolaty earth note with a big pepper blast and a slight leather on the finish.
The burn was decent, needing a few touch ups here and there. The ash held tight and white.
Then things started to act up a little.
But things worked themselves out.
For the most part.
The flavors remained consistent throughout the first 1/3. There were a few puffs where the pepper was absent...glimmerings of things to come . Once the 2/3 came, the flavors started to transition. The pepper began tapering off, eventually becoming a nice spice mixture, and a creaminess developed. By half way though the 2/3 the predominate flavors were a chocolaty earthiness with a cream to it and spices on the finish. This flavor profile continued for the rest of the cigar, except it somehow kept getting better . I liked it, I liked it a lot :stretchgr.
Towards the start of the 3/3, I began to wonder if I'd be able to finish the cigar. It'd been a little while since I've smoked one and I was starting to get a pretty good
But I also didn't want to put it down .
Unfortunately not long after that pic I had to give it up. My head was starting to spin and I was beginning to feel it in my stomach. Pete Johnson kicked my a$$ :headroll:. Total smoking time was approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
Overall a great cigar , despite the slight burn issues. I enjoyed it a ton and while it's priced out of my usual range, it's nice to have something a little pricier once in a while. I'd look forward to having another in the future.
