  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Here is the latest review from the Cigar King blog:

The Tatuaje Avion 12 is a new release for 2012, hence the 12 moniker. The Tatuaje Avion 12 is part 2 of a 3 part series under the Avion line. The first in the series was released in the summer of 2011 and part 3 will be released in 2013, presumably in the summer like the previous 2 releases. Once all 3 are released, they will become a limited production, not to be confused with limited edition, and should be available somewhat regularly. The blend on the Avion series is the same as the Tatuaje Fausto line which both share with the T110, a blend done as a single store release for a B&M in Hawaii. Going even further back will find this blend used in a limited release called Thermonuclear, produced in 2005. Pete Johnson described this blend in a Stogie Review video as being “high power, high strength but balanced on the palate, full in your stomach but soft and sweet on you palate.” The size difference between the ’11 and ’12 is very noticeable, with the ’12 being slightly more then an inch shorter and coming to more of a nipple at the foot then the Avion 11.

Tatuaje Avion 12

Size: Box Pressed Perfecto 5 5/8 x 48/52

Wrapper: Ecuadoran Habano

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Strength: Full

Flavor: Full

Cost: $8.50/stick or $155/box of 20

Appearance: I absolutely love the look of this cigar. The shape is inviting, the wrapper is a lovely dark brown color with a nice mottling to it. The red and gold band stands out and catches your eye quickly. The seams are almost invisible on this stick without any major veins showing. The Tatuaje Avion 12 has a nice feel to it, not overly soft with just a hint of give when squeezing ever so slightly. The wrapper is smooth to the touch without being overly oily leaving only a slight sheen to it.

Pre-light Aroma: The Tatuaje Avion 12 has a great draw after the cut, even with the nipple still in tact on the foot. The dry draw brings flavors of pepper, cocoa and a tangy earthiness. The foot smells of a thick, earthy aroma with a chocolate like sweetness and a small tinge of spice. The wrapper smells of cedar and leather with some sweetness mingled into it. My mouth is watering before I even light the cigar, usually a good sign.

Now that we have the pre-light festivities out of the way, lets put flame to this stick. I lit only the nipple of the foot on the Tatuaje Avion 12 and instantly was hit with a flood of earthy, spicy smoke. The cedar that was apparent on the wrapper is also slightly evident, bringing a slight sweetness to the earthy flavors. The spice is evident on both the palate and through the nose, a nice black pepper taste that in this case pairs very well with the heavy earth. The draw is superb with clouds of white/blue smoke rolling off my lips with each puff. The aroma from the smoke is a very woodsy scent that a couple of gentlemen in the lounge commented on and enjoyed. Strength wise, this Avion 12 definitely sets a bar high right off the bat, being a medium-full smoke right away and I only expect it to get stronger.

Now into the second part of the Tatuaje Avion 12 the spice has backed off considerably and the sweet cocoa flavors are showing along with the earthiness from before. The ash held on until I got into this part and I knocked it off myself to avoid any lap ash. The cedar and cocoa make for a wonderful sweetness both on the tongue and through the nose with just a hint of spice on the retrohale. The aroma is still a heavy woodsy scent and is a nice aroma to fill an area with.

Moving into the final third the flavors have stayed consistent with what I had in the 2nd part. The strength has really come on, which I totally expected. This has become a truly full bodied cigar and has been a wonderful ride. The finish is clean and I was able to smoke it to less then an inch without it getting hot or bitter. The quality was superb throughout without needing any touch-ups or relights. The burn line wasn’t perfect but never got out of control and always corrected itself quickly. If your looking for a full body, full flavor bomb, then this is most definitely the cigar for you.

Cigar King Staff Quotes:

-Gary “A powerhouse from start to finish. The spice and earth make for a nice combo after a big dinner”.

-Mitchel “Strong but so smooth. The Nicaraguan tobacco’s used here make for big flavor in a smaller cigar.”

-Josh “That’s a spicy meatball!”

-Joe “Full bodied, rich and peppery smoke. Great stick and even better than last years.”

these are so yummy! worth pointing out, with the box press, they feel very petite, like a corona gorda. they do NOT, however, short you on either flavor or burn time. thanks as always for the review! o)

Nice review, they are good now, but can use some age. I've taken mine out of plastic and it seems the flavors get richer after a few days of being exposed to air.
