While I'm sure that my limited palate won't do this cigar or the review justice I thought I would do it anyway. This is one of those cigars that to me represents everything that I would look for in a cigar. The initial run of these is limited to 200 boxes for Tobacco Grove but will be available as a regular release later in 2011 without the closed foot or pigtail cap and will be in a much nicer box Pete said was designed to look more like a wooden jar.
The construction is solid with a nice brown wrapper that reminds me of aged leather with a closed foot and pigtail cap. It really sets it apart and gives it a classy look.
The cap clipped easily with no cracking or unravelling. Pre light draw gave me a bit of pepper on my lips and the taste of sweet tobacco and leather was dominant. There is also something else there that I cant quite put my finger on. Even with the closed foot the cigar lit easily and I was hit immediately with a blast of pepper that I have come to expect from a Pete Johnson cigar. The smoke output was more than plentiful and the ash is very light with some specks of gray. There is a flavor that I cant describe as anything but musty. Not in a bad way at all but rather a unique earthy taste. I like it.
1" in and I'm thinking I have found my favorite cigar of 2011. Everything about this fits my preference. Burn and draw are perfect and the dominant flavors so far are pepper and sweet tobacco.
Well into the first 1/3 and the spice has faded and given way to very strong chocolate flavors. I can honestly say I have never tasted chocolate this dominant in a cigar.
Just past 1/2 way and the woodsy/earth flavors are really coming through. The burn has remained sharp and the ash holds for about 1 1/2" before letting go. In the last 1" the same earthy flavors are once again mixed with strong blasts of chocolate. Just starting to get some heat but not nearly enough to put it down.
Overall:
What a great cigar to enjoy one of the first 70 degree days of the year. The Robins are out and the Woodpeckers are easily heard in the background. The total smoke time was just over an hour and this was easily one of the best cigars I have had. I prefer small ring gauge cigars and to get one that tastes this good makes it a winner for sure to me. At $8.50 this will definitely be a staple in my humidor. It's nice to see that in this time of LE's that someone like Pete is still committed to producing great cigars that will be available to the masses as a regular production addition to his line.
